It causes the shafts in the gearbox to vibrate, makes no difference on a 5spd box as it has 2 shafts but the 6spd has 3 shafts (as it has 2 final drives and 2 sets of gears).

The gearbox is silent now with the OEM dual mass flywheel so I'm very happy.

Was good to see you yesterday Eddy and your car was sounding great on the rollers and put out very impressive figures :D

So it's ok on 5 speed then

Yep, I had a G60 single mass flywheel when I had 5spd and I'd highly recommend it.

i've had the same, would highly recommend it also.

Eddy and Bengie, re: clutches

Sorry to unearth an old thread but I could do with your knowledge and experience to establish the best parts for my 2001 Octy 4x4 hatch. At the moment I still have the K03s on a stage 2 APR remap and the noise coming from the front end (particularly first gear) is terrible. I don't currently race the car and prefer the stealth and sleeper road car idea. So which is the best setup? SMF or DMF with which suitable clutch kit?

Eddy,

If the OEM DMF is rated to 280ft/lbs and your chariot is churning out 390ish won't that cause problems for you?

I'd recommend an OEM G60 flywheel and Helix clutch; excellent value for money given the performance and power handling. That assumes you're sticking with the 5spd box. You won't have any noise issues with an SMF on the 5spd.

Yes. It's likely i'll have to replace the flywheel more often than if I had a SMF.

Thats dedication for you .........I know how much they are :eek:

Thanks for the info. I was going to stick with the K04 upgrade but now not so sure.

Decision time, before the existing clutch has to be replaced.

I would love to go for a six speed box but I was advised that it is a complex and costly mod affecting flywheel, clutch, props and all of the box connections. If this is not the case then I will get it done before I change my clutch. Will this be the same as the six speed A3 quattro for clutch and flywheel, etc?

You have already gone through the arduous process of research for the 4x4 upgrades. So your direction and guidance on the pros and cons or the benefits/costs is worth a fortune and is much appreciated.

You have previously stated the differences with 4x4 rear suspension and brakes. If only I had read the post before buying the Koni coilover set. Bad choice! Now I am having difficulty getting springs for the rear to get it sat a little higher.

Can you please advise?

Unless you plan to top 300bhp then stick with the 5spd as the 6spd is quite involved.

If you just want springs then I'd recommend a full set of H&R's which cost £150-200 IIRC. I would advise strongly against having different springs front and rear as it's likely to result in unpredictable handling.

Thanks for the help.

Is it the 29408 H&R's I should order for the hatch?

Europerformance are asking £160+£9p+p, sounds okay.

Do the back springs require the adjustable platforms from the Koni set?

Cheers!:D

i agree 100% on the G60+uprated friction plate route, served me faultlessly for 2 years running 200bhp then about 280bhp including track days, launches and giving it plenty of abuse

infact i have destroyed a gearbox in 25k before the clutch complained at all :D

the only difference i had was i had a sachs plate not a helix but either way they are very good and as Eddy has said the 6 speed requires lots and lots of bits changing.
