Update on my car (Brakes, Flywheel and starring role!)

Featured Replies

As I've not been on for a while (been busy working on my house) I thought I'd post a little update.

Firstly I've finally had enough of the horrible noise the single mass ali flywheel causes so it's being replaced with an OEM dual mass jobbie.

Secondly despite upgrading the brakes to porsche items from the brembos I had I'm still not happy and the pads are only lasting 5k! So I'm changing the front pads to DS3000 as recommended by Bill from Badger5 and I'm fitting the ECS stage 1R vented kit at the rear which consists of 308mm 2 piece vented discs which I'll pair up with DS2500 pads.

Also I've been asked if my car can be included on a DVD (which I believe will is for a car mag) this will be getting filmed on the 20th October at JBS and will include rolling road runs and possibly an interview with me.

I'll dropping it off sometime soon and hopefully I'll be even happier with it when I pick it up on the day of filming.

Eddy the 3000's need heat.

I drove an vRS with them on and cold be wary + in the damp/wet.

When hot though, omfg they stop a car.

For reference my 2500's managed 40k, quite a lot of m-way miles but quite a bit of good driving too.

I suspect on the 3000's you'll share the view that n+1 pots is not always the answer.

Bill said he thought they were ok when cold but I suppose I'll find out for myself soon enough. My brakes get pretty hot pretty quickly though, when I pull up I can hear them 'pinging' as they contract.

I'm hoping the rears have a positive effect too as I believe they play a bigger role in stopping on 4wd's than fwd's.

still got the flywheel eddy? :D

i'll buy it off you!

Sure, you can have the matching clutch plate with it too if you want. It should be available after the 20th.

I dont know Eddy you must have loads of cash somewhere in the house :D

Shame im working on the day so cant make it down to JBS to see your monster on the rollers

On a side note, how much is a passenger ride in that thing? :D

I don't give demo rides even to my closest friends. If I'm driving somewhere for a reason that's different, but personally I think taking someone out just to show them what your car can do is asking for trouble.

I was just kidding really. :) Have you done any quarter mile times?

No, doesn't really interest me to be honest, I just like driving it. :)

Im not suprised :)

Bengie's not bothered about the noise of the flywheel in his car - he wont be able to hear it over the exhaust

The rear discs aren't fitting. :( I didn't have any fitting problems with OEM R32 rears but for some reason the rear discs of the ECS Stage 1R vented kit are clashing with the rear arms. :(

I'm really not happy.

Very odd, and thats a direct fitment (supposedly) for the car?

They're supposed to fit all the 4wd cars on the same platform. I've got JBR Performance who I got the brakes from liasing with my installer now.

Secondly despite upgrading the brakes to porsche items from the brembos I had

And those brakes are damn nice, thanks. Still using the original pads you sent too, so despite the lack of meat on them they're lasting a long time. :D Have new ds2500s to fit soon though. The discs are holding out too and not going to change them this time. Loads of meat left. :)

ECS have confirmed that they've had this problem before and it's down to VW tolerances. They wanted me to grind down the offending parts but as they are the mounting points for the rear control arms I've said no as I don't fancy risking the rear end collapsing.

So as you can guess they're going back for a refund so I'm now looking for something else.

I'm setting off in a minute for JBS so if anyone facnies calling over to see my car on the RR then I'll you there.

Just got back and thought I'd put up a quick post before going out.

I'm very impressed with the DS3000's initial bite is so much better than anything I've had on my Octavia so far.

Figures from the RR run were 455bhp and 390ftlb.

Thanks, I have a printout, electronic copy will be emailed to me on Monday so I'll post it up then.

Boost is same as before 1.6-1.65 bar only fueling/timing has been tweaked so there's more in the turbo but as I'm happy with it as it is I don't see the point in pushing the turbo any harder at the moment. Also the clutch disc and flywheel are ready for you now. :)
