Problems with Norton Internet Security

Featured Replies

About two weeks ago, the Liveupdate function on my NIS began malfunctioning, so that updates wouldn't be installed. I got an LU1812 error message saying that the Firewall update had malfunctioned and, as a result, all the linked updates had failed to install.

I am still getting this error message.

The technical support advice is that, nothing can be done and that I will have to wait a minimum of two weeks before a corrected update is issued.

Meanwhile. I presume that my system is open to the latest threats.

I had a similar problem with NIS 3 months ago.

Co-incidentally, at more or less the same time, my Windows Vista Utlimate package declared that it required re-activation (Purchased and installed 3 months ago). When I attempted re-activation using the product key from the back of the disk holder, the MS activation site said that the code was already in use. Anyway, after much tooing and froing that is fixed now.

Have I had an intrusion or is this just the usual customer/technical services fun and games ?

I have had a similar 'error' message, but it appeared to install all the other updates. I'm running XP so not sure where the problem lies. I just put it down to software being tempermental!!:D

I've got a feeling that my problem is linked in some way to the subscription cycle for NIS. My subscription renewal is in December each year, but symantec release their new yaer product in the middle of the current year.

NIS 2008 has just been released for sale and I'm still running 2007 with 71 days left ! And surprise, surprise, 2007 starts malfunctioning now !

I had the same problem at approximately the same time last year with NIS 2006. The 2006 problem was fixed by technical suppport, and I got NIS 2007 for free for the remaining days of my 2006 subscription !

When I contacted technical support this year they couldn't explain why I'd got two live accounts ! Duh !

I wonder ?

I would do yourself a favour and not buy Nis 2008, its a pile of rubbish!

Kaspersky Internet Security is much better, doesn't slow your pc as much, tech support is one phone call away (with no charge!) and it actually finds and removes virus's which is more than can be said about norton.

However if you want something that is going to pop up in your face every 5 mines telling you the world is going to end, buy Norton

Being peripherally involved, during working hours, in the "End of the World" business (UK MOD), I prefer to leave the workplace behind when I'm at Home.

Thank's for the advice.

Norton is a turd.

Gets in the way of everything, digs it 'orrible little tendrils into every nook and cranny of Windows, slows everything down loads and make the PC crash. Plus it charges you for the privilege.

Uninstall it completely, download AVG or Avast (not both), I prefer avast.

Download Lavasoft Adaware

Download Javacool Spyware blaster

Download Zonealarm if you don't have a router with a firewall (that is switched on).

Use those 3 and keep them updated.

Download Firefox and only ever use IE to run Microsoft update.

Download Thunderbird and never ever use Outlook express (even better use an online email account)

Don't download shiny crap

Follow the above and have a happy and fast machine for years not days.

Total cost £0.
