Rear pads "coming apart"

Featured Replies

My car had it's 2 year service at 28k miles and I was told the rear brake pads were 'breaking up'. The material was 'coming off' the steel plate part, apparently, with cracking. Now I didn't see this, but was told I needed new pads and discs.

I declined the offer to fit the parts so I can have a look myself.

Anyone else seen or heard of this? The pads are maybe 25% worn at the most as my miles are mostly a motorway commute to work.

Was told definitely not warranty work.

Thanks

i've removed the material from the backing plate on 2 sets of front pads after some track laps , but i've never heard of the rears doing that , my rear pads are the originals at 52k miles

Maindealer?

Never heard of that happening ever:shakehead

Second opinion m'thinks

:)I've seen several brake pads where the lining comes "unstuck" from the steel plate. It's not that uncommon, but I wouldn't expect it on a 2 year old car. Could you take the rear wheels off and take a pic for us?

Thanks for the replies

I will try and get round to checking them soon, and I will take a pic or two.

The tech said the pads needed attention soon so I suppose I should have a look in case he is right?

Yes main dealer, that gets good reviews.

BTW was quoted £120 + vat for rear discs and pads. 2 year service cost £214 incl brake fluid change.

I have googled for this prob and I can't find much.

Service guy said it was common? Surely if it is common, and with light useage, then the parts aren't up to standard?

I had this prob on a new Citroen after only one year, the rear discs did so little that the discs just rotted (i live near the sea) and the pads just fell apart. Wasn't happy, but had no similar issues with the Skoda.

if it was common , i think a few on here would have complained about it , but i've never seen anything on the forum about that
