Turbo Dynamics stage 2 Turbo

Featured Replies

It is technically possible, but it's recommend you uprate a Garrett turbo, rather than further work on a KKK unit.

Steve

I might see if theres anyone local that would hybrid my KKK unit, just to see how much it would be

Go for it, but I wouldn't bother IMO. The particular KKK model used with the Fabia isn't strong enough and that's why the Hybrid units offered are based on Garrett models.

what are the garret models that I could pick up to hybrid? I understand that the KKK might not be the best to do it to, but I don't fancy paying the 900+vat for a turbo dynamics hybrid

I've read that a pd150 turbo is ok to hybrid but I can't seem to find anywhere to get one, I've checked ebay and a few other places on the net

I think, but dont trust me on this that the td stage 2 turbo is a hybrid pd150 turbo?

Not 100% on that but i think so

There's quite a bit of info around the forum on this.

To source a Garrett turbo from a PD130 or PD150 Golf/Bora is the lowest cost route. This can then be sent off to TD for upgrade. Contact them for the latest pricing on that. The 130 uses a GT1749VA turbo, the 150 a VB varient (quite similar, but the VB has more robust internals).

Either unit can be taken to Stage 2 level by Turbo Dynamics.

Steve

What about forge VNT actuator in this Turbocharger? Does it work good?

Phoned TD this morning, to hybrid the pd150 its £595+vat depending on condition of the turbo.

And to buy one from them it was over 1k!

Would the pd150 turbo be suitable without sending it off to get hybrid'ed?

You should see prices for a proper turbo ;) TD's prices are actually very reasonable and they provide a good quality service.

Yes you could run a standard PD150 turbo straight in there. You'd have to be confident that the one you bought was in good working condition, and would do the job without needing any additional work or overhaul.

A PD150 turbo will remap close to 200 reliably, and safely give over 300lb/ft. Obviously consider your clutch though.

I've got an uprated clutch at the mo, so thats not a problem. I'm fitting a FMIC in the next couple of weeks so was just curious about getting a bigger turbo then a map.

At the moment my car is running 185bhp 291lbs/ft with just a remap on the standard turbo and SMIC.

I would get it mapped to suit a hybrid unit as soon as physically possible myself. If you're just fitting a PD150 unit in standard guise it isn't as important, but the map would need to be adjusted to make the most from it.

When running a FMIC on a standard KKK turbo, you'll find there's more lag and it's a little slower to spool up, compared with the original SMIC setup.

Cheers for all the help and advice mate.

I wouldn't have bothered fitting a FMIC but my SMIC has a hole in it so its leaking air. Thats the only reason I'm replacing it.

Ah well never mind, but I do have a spare SMIC you could have taken off me :)

Just had my KKK Hybrid from Turbo technics in northampton, Reason for going KKK was there very cheep to buy, there is next to no lag when you have it all setup right and mapped correctly. I have been remomended to run between 1.4-1.8 bar and then once bedded in I could push to 2 bar. Should see 210-220Bhp im not sure on torque but they thought it shoud be around 360 ft lb.

all in all includeing buying the turbo and having it hybrid it cost me £454...... for the little improvement in performance you get with the PD150 it is not worth cost.

And to be honest the KKK for me was much more driveable.

Interesting Phil. What upgrades and work is included for the KKK unit?

Similar power and torque to a stage-1 TD hybrid then...

Cheers,

Steve

Ah very interesting mate. this was the info I was looking to get. How much was it to get the turbo hybrid'ed? If this wasn't too costly then I could easily have my own turbo thats on the car just now sent off, just as you have done!

Intersting about the hybrid KKK. Would like to know more. I take the compressor wheel is changed for a larger one?

yea as well as the compressor housing, I had a one off machined housing made for it, I am currently getting my FMIC sorted, im not the first to do it, Alex is running his estate on a KKK with water/meth injection.

to be honest i just couldn't sped 1K on the PD150 when the KKK is not too far off the performance of the PD150 for much less money.

Totally agree. Big difference in price. I know the KKK is not as stronge but looked after it should hold up well I would of thought.

Be interesting to see your results. Who's doing the mapping?

i think it is going to be Jabba doing the mapp, Alex got his mapped there and rates them very high, I have looked at other placed but they have not been too confident with there figures.

The KKK once hybrid is just as strong, the weeker components are replaced with uprated ones, I am not going to pretend I know everything about turbos but i was assures with the use of good oil changed every 5K and also letting it idel before turning it off..... it will last a long time.
