HELP!!! I've just posted in the group buy thread for the jabba remap but I thought I'd ask here (as a search didn't yield much) people's opinions on custom vs generic remaps.

I've researched quite a bit on the subject since joining here over a year ago and was pretty much sold on the idea of letting jabba do their thing sometime early next year (Even have SWMBO's permission :P) but after having a dyno run done locally the chap there has put some doubt in my mind as to which way to go.

My thoughts were to get a custom rolling road job done to ensure the best, smooth and reliable power increase, taking into account the need to not kill the clutch in a few thousand miles etc - I don't drive it that hard regularly but want to release some extra horses for those occasions I do, and improve fuel economy if possible when not ragging it .

If I only planned to replace the recirc valve, and possibly get a better air filter (panel?) without touching exhaust or intercooler etc, would it still be better for me to pay the extra and have the custom map?

My concerns with generic are that I may end up with flat spots, boost spikes etc and from the sound of it jabba only offer the before and after plots with the custom service.(Also, with the cost of a RR plot it seems like this is pretty much the difference too!)

Advice please performance boffins!

Hi, people might differ over this with their own views, but with the car being pretty much standard I would personally go for the generic remap. I don't think you would really benifit for spending extra on the custom remap. I have got a forge TIP & carbonio CAI fitted along with a turbo back exhaust system & i've had the Custom Code phase1 generic remap by JBS & the car is absolutly fantastic to drive with no flat spots:thumbup:

I'm starting to think that maybe the generic would be ok but I would definately want a dyno run after to see what it produces - with the average cost of this being around £50 it's only about £50 shy of the custom one, hence my dilema!

Ebay do so called generic maps for £99 if you post ur ecu away.

Removing the ECU is not an option (car needed every day) and if I wanted to f**k my ECU up then I'd buy the software and do it myself rather than let some ebay chimp do the same!

Any remap will be done while I'm on the premises, and verified on a dyno there and then!

I guess you could look at it another way!

Group Buy Custom is £427 with a before & after print out ;)

Fezboy, you're right there - that's pretty much the conclusion I've come to .

The only curve ball thrown in now is that jabba is one hell of a drive away and the guy who did my dyno plot is local and apparantly does vag generic maps, with the ability to dyno and adjust on-site so I now need to see how much his services would be and weigh it all up before committing to the group buy.

I can agree that I probably only need a generic but as having a dyno plot is essential to me the added cost on jabba makes it only £40 less than a full custom .

Decisions, decisions........:2002headw:ne_nau:

Hmm, i doubt you could afford the ByteShooter Half-Master hardware required for writing your own map as they are 4300 euros.

Not to mention paying for the individual readings taken from each ecu, sent to a german world renowned mapping company and remaped for a TUV approved file.

But i take your point;)

I'll post up some details when I know a bit more about his services - a work friend knows him and is going to find out some more for me and costs etc, although I believe he has quite a good reputation. (The business is quite new but he is experienced)

Certainly came across as very knowledgeable and friendly.

Thanks, cool let me know i may be interested too.

I'll let you know how mine goes.

Fingers crossed.

He has a website too ecu-evolution - evolve your car with ecu evolution

Well got my ecu back yesterday and the difference is astounding.Chris certainly know his stuff. Really good torque and the power seems to pull well troughout the range not like before when the turbo used to drop off at high revs. The car is totally transformed

Also the other good news is i acheived my highest mpg reading on way home from work today, and this is when the evenings are getting cold and mpg usually drops off for me. Summer should give even better readings.

I would highly recommend this mapper and for the curent £99 ebay price its a bargain:thumbup::)
