Bubbly oil?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Had the low disc pad warning light come on this morning (didn't know what it was so checked everything over before getting the manual).

Pulled the dipstick up and the oil has bubbles on it.... had a look after work when the car had been standing for like 8 hours and exactly the same thing.

Any idea what this is?!

The oil seemed fairly thick on the dipstick too!

Had a full service about 500 miles ago.

Car is running fine with no other symptoms... I thought I saw some metal in there but can't really confirm as when I wiped it with a cloth I couldn't really see it.

Bubbles and thick both sound bad!

Mine is like well hydrated urine. Thinnest oil I've ever seen in a car infact.

Well I've just checked it again and there are no bubbles (checked 3-4 times) and the oil isn't looking that thick anymore.

Guess it's just when I've been driving around it's all moving around creating bubbles?!

I'll check again before I leave for work at 4.30, no point in checking the oil after a 30 minute drive!!! :)

Well checked for the sake of it when I got to work and the dipstick has bubbles on the end again.

Guess I've just got bubbly oil! Didn't look that thick, so doubt it's anything to worry about...just never come accross it before!

most probably condensation - check when hot to see if its gone

I checked when I got to work after a 30 minute drive and there were bubbles. When cold this morning there were non.

this is usually something that occurs when you do short runs, round town etc.

Are you having to top up the water ??

Nope, water hasn't gone down at all from what I can see.

I don't do many short trips really. Work and back, 30 minutes each way, then back from the gym at night which is like a 2 minute drive.

Weird isn't it? Last night and this morning when it was cold and the oil was fine!

Is the oil level correct? If you're not losing water and there's no sign of contamination of oil in water or vice versa, then I think it's one of 2 things:-

1) If over-filled, the oil is being whipped up by the crankshaft.

2) If fill level is correct, you've got a blocked crankcase breather, leading to the oil being pressurised by you driving the car. In extreme cases, this has been known to blow the oil filler cap into the bonnet hard enough to make a dent!
