ARGH I paid someone to remove the swirls from my bonnet but now it's worse!

Featured Replies

I rang them and as you say, I need to polish it :o I only asked them to get rid of the swirls, I did not ask them to polish it afterwards :o:O More fool me! Now I just need a dry day so I can polish it, do you think there will be one soon??

I am a little embarassed now, sorry :(

Or are they fobbing you off? If they've removed the swirls, you won't see any swirls, LSP or not.

Hmmmm now I am confused :(

Basically, swirl removal involves using an aggressive polish to 'eat into' the clear coat or lacquer on your paintwork. The process removes a very small amount of clear coat but removes the fine swirls or spiderwebs in your paint.

Once this is done, the paint will only show deeper, harder to remove swirls or not at all if done by a professional.

If your car has undergone swirl removal then the swirls will definitely be less noticeable, not more, and should also be less noticeable under direct light. Until LSP is applied (last stage product), then it's not going to shine but it will still be an improvement.

Here is an example of a swirl removal that I did -

The difference is obvious.

I think theyre taking the Michael to be honest here.

Time to name them?

Steve

Rubbish, Ive used #83 and #80 on a rotary polisher and meguiars pads which give a wax ready finish.

It may give a wax ready finish but you can get a better shine by using a finer polish/pad combination or a glaze with a fine pad. I used Meguiars Scratch X in summer with a 4" cutting pad. This removed 90-95% of the marring and didn't dull the paint noticeabkly. But when I applied Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine afterwards with a medium 6" pad, the paint was a bit 'brighter'. Then I used Zymol HD Clense which really made the flake pop

So although you can use a single polish and apply wax or sealant over this, I still think to get the best results from the paint you need a finer polish and/or glaze before waxing/sealing. One more thing to note, I have black magic paint and the differences are more apparent with black due to the depth you can get, compared to silver.

Back on topic lol: If you pay someone to remove swirls from your paint, then you should not have to polish or wax it afterwards unless that was part of the deal.

Is getting rid of the swirls not a form of polishing? Surely polishing and swirl removal are one and the same.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, waxing/sealing/LSP (Last Stage Protection) is a separate process, and could possibly have been excluded from the deal (totally unprofessional but possible I guess), but their comment above makes no sense to me and is being used purely to fob you off.

I would suggest getting some pics posted on here before you do anything else.

Let some of the members on here have a look at them - they may be able to confirm whether you are being "fobbed off" or not.

Your being fobbed off mate, the company will need to have polished the car to remove the swirls, if they are asking you to polish the car then what have they done? the answer is nothing.

If they were payed to remove the swirls then you shouldn't have any swirls now.

Think of the swirls as very fine scratches in the surface of the paint/laquer. to remove these you have to remove a microscopic layer of that paint/laquer to level it all off. This process IS polishing, some people will call it compounding, but that's just a different name for the same thing.

One the paint has been leveled off again, that when you apply your wax's or sealents (dependign on the type of finish you want).

My guess is that they didn't have the necessary skils to remove the swirls from your car (as VAG paint is very tough) so have tried to either fill them with a glaze product, or just ignore them and hope you see a clean car and not notice that the swirls are still there.

OR the company just doesn't understand waht is actually involved in removing swirls, or indeed what swirls are.

I managed to polish my car today, I used resin then high gloss finish. I have to say I am very pleased with it, it looks chuffin great!!! :D

thats what i mean, u can only really see swirls when the sun is shining directly on them

But on the right hand side there are no swirls, hence you can't see them.

U cant see the swirls on the right because theres no sun to show them up
