Cooked my clutch!

Featured Replies

Hmm. Kind of makes drag racing in a highly tuned diesel not that much fun then I guess. Lots of lag and 1st gear is so short you have to set off in 2nd.

just watch the gooby that goes before hand - he's off like a scalded cat and you can hear him cane it in 1st. The benefits of being able to fully utilise 1st gear and having 4wd to put the power down....

I guess it's all about saving time so it may actually be quicker to have a bit of lag in 2nd than be fighting to get traction in 1st and hitting the limiter instantly.

Chris

Yup - Proved this at TRAX - 7.3 seconds lighting up first gear, yet a 2nd gear start similar to my practise ones bagged me a 6.84. You get simlar start off the line in speed terms, but no geachange into 2nd. I have made the wheels spin a LOT using 2nd at the Pod, but I suspect my clutch being on the way out yesterday somewhat hampered this....

So were you being gentle on the throttle to avoid clutch slip? We can only see and hear what's going on in the video but can't see what your feet were doing. :D

The engine sounds like it's not being pushed that hard - like you've not fully mashed the throttle once you've got moving and thus progress is quite slow.

Jase, you will love your SMF that is for sure mate.

My foot was mashed to the floor. I was THIS close to just dipping the clutch again to bring the revs back up.... The thing is with this cam and other bits, all the power is high in the rev range, so trying to do anything below 2000rpm is pointless.... But i like it that way. ;) You get a real surge to the redline from about 3000rpm.

Hmm.....that's a bit of a dilemma then really as you'd almost need 1st gear to get the car rolling then use 2nd with the elevated revs to surge forward. The fact the power is so high in the rev range couple with the fact you need to use 2nd gear for your starts = severe bog down.

I'd have been interested to see what a 1st gear start being quite careful with the throttle coupled with a noisy pedal mashing 2nd gear run would've done.

I remember going to Melbourne (local dragway near to York) with a couple of mates. One had an Escort RS Turbo, mapped and stripped out etc. His standing starts were horrible - he simply could not put the power down and wheelspan horribly. Instead he tried going to 2nd gear really early after getting rolling and the car just bogged down as the revs were too low for any boost. He then had a go at feeding in the power in 1st and the same in second to actually get a very good start off the line and give the other lad a run for his money for the first 50 yards or so in his standard Evo VI before the extra power pulled him away.

I'm not criticising your drag techniques (far from it :D), I'm just getting a feel of where the power lies in your cars rev range compared to the choice of gears etc. ;)

so who is this bloke then?

need to contact him :)

think its tts in the site sponsors on scn

ahhh, already got their number but they are closed now :)

cheers

I remember reading an article ages ago about a guy who tricked out a Ford Capri for drag racing.

He had an insane ammount of torque and the only transmission that could cope with it was one out of a van

How much would a heavy duty clutch cost then?

they can be quite expensive, as above the clutch and pressure plate of a stage 3+ spec costs over £600 and that doesn't include the light weight alloy flywheel option which would be a few hundred more.

the spec stage 3 is about 600,that includes the smf so its a bit of a bargain:thumbup:

bengie beat me too it but just been on scn and he's deffinatly wrong,610 does get you the smf plus clutch:P

I was quoted £800 for the spec s3+ & flywheel, so have saved £200 getting it from the US direct. :)

The stage 3 is a good clutch apparently, but I had to pay extra for the s3+ as the "+" implies a much higher torque rating.

Hmm.....that's a bit of a dilemma then really as you'd almost need 1st gear to get the car rolling then use 2nd with the elevated revs to surge forward.

Thats exactly what i was doing in mine..... hence the 14.0 1/4 :D

also means you have slightly more mechanical sympathy......

oh well, now im into the world of 6000rpm 4wd launches with all 4 tyres lit up ;)

what you got hen luke? sounds like fun :D

Well, I'm gonna take a guess at a Lupo Gti Quattro with a tuned 1.8T in it!!!

I am going to guess audi S3 :D

I am going to guess audi S3 :D
