Questions on the 1.8T specs.

Featured Replies

I have a couple of questions about the 1.8T spec Octavia.

1. What's the EDS? Electroning Differential S(omething). What does it do? is it an electronic substitute of a limited slip differential (LSD)? how does it work? is it front and rear for the 4x4?

2. Intercoolers? does the 150bhp have any? the RS?

3. Antispin. Can you make it disable-able (sorry :))? ESP has a switch on the dash but not the antispin...

4. Haldex: Can you rig a switch (like the Ford Maverick) for manual engagement?

Anybody??:(

Not sure what EDS is, nothing in the manual I could see

The RS has an intercooler, on a UK car its behind the lower front bumper on the drivers side, your passenger side. I think the 150bhp is the same

Antispin. Can you make it disable-able (sorry :))? ESP has a switch on the dash but not the antispin...

The RS only has the Antispin (ASR) and its disabled by pressing the ASR button on the Dash. I think the ESP and ASR are linked so if you have pressed the ESP button ASR is off aswell.

Haldex: Can you rig a switch (like the Ford Maverick) for manual engagement?

I Know Ian (tavia4x4) found a way to disable the haldex, I dont think you will be able to engage it manually though.

This is interesting because when the salesman sold me my SLXi he told me it had ESD (EDS?) and described it as a form of LSD. However ASR it certainly doesn't have - as witness the manic spinning of the wheels on anything but the smoothest of launches esp. in the wet, and no switches or lights on the dash.

If you push it hard round corners under power you _can_ feel _something_ happening - sort of a thrumming noise which is not tyres, so it may be there, but it is not accompanied by any flashing lights or other signs.

Sorry if this doesn't add any concrete information to the discussion, but count me an interested party if anyone _does_ have some !!

:robot:

Just got this from an earlier thread which explains the various electronic trickery around - words are per the Octavia owners manual. Covers several off the areas raised by otheos (I think EDL might be what you were calling EDS).

EDL

The electronic differential lock continually compares the rpm of the drive wheels, and if it identifies a difference between them which could lead to an individual wheel spinning, for example if the two wheels are on different types of surface or accelerating on wet leaves, the system brakes the wheel affected until uniform rpm of all drive wheels is restored.

ASR

ASR traction control ensures the Octavia's stability when pulling away or accelerating. If the engine power or torque being transmitted to the drive wheels is too great, eg on a slippery road surface, engine torque is automatically reduced until optimum road-holding returns, thus preventing wheelspin. A light indicates whether the ASR system is on. It can be manually switched off.

ESP

The electronic stability programme is an effective tool in preventing your Octavia from skidding. Sensors identify a risk of skidding and provide individual braking to the wheels involved, thus keeping the vehicle in a straight line. ESP includes the ABS/ASR systems and can be manually switched off.

EBC

The EBC (engine braking control) operates in conjunction with the ABS. It is intended to prevent the driven wheel of the car being excessively sharply braked when "braking with the engine" as a result of releasing the accelerator or shifting down on a smooth road. The EBC automatically increases the engine speed in order to maintain optimal steerability of the car even when "braking with the engine".

The Owner's Manual also includes mention of the traction control system TCS.

Hope that is all clear! :D

In the Dutch brochure EDL is also called EDS and is described as an an electronic LSD. EDS is a German acronym and stands for "Elektronische Differenzial-Sperre". It is an open diff with a variable degree of lock, fed by the ABS/EBD and ASR/MSR electronics.

EDS was developed for the quattro system in 1994 and can now be found on all AWD VAG cars, with both Haldex clutch and torsen centre diff. In the current quattro system it is on the front and rear axles, replacing the all-mechanical triple torsen system (the 'real' quattro system to some!), but don't know about 4motion/4x4.

ESP is in fact ABS, EBV ("Elektronische Bremskraft-Verteilung" or electronic brake distribution), EDS and ASR/MSR working in perfect unison, so pushing the ESP button will disconnect all of these systems. (ABS too?)

Wow, thanks! Lot's of info there. :D

Otheos, as I see from your signature you are Greek!. Come and join us at the forums of 4Troxoi and Power Mag (there is a big thread about Octavia @ 4Troxoi)
