I know (just about) what a Turbo is and I think I understand VVT but could someone please explain Drive by wire, and its benefits?

One implementation is the replacement of throttle cables with electrical cables that pass a variable control current from the pedal. So when you push the pedal, a signal is sent to an actuator in the engine that increases fuel flow.

Yes, think of it as a dimmer switch on the wall. the more you press the accelerater is the same as turning up a dimmer switch, so the more fuel to the engine is similar to more light in your room. Your just moving a rheostat (variable resistor).
