Tyre help

Featured Replies

Due to a mis-hap last night parking the pride and joy my nearside front tyre is now very dead and ripped so I'm after your knowledge and opinions on my options for new tyres.

I've decided to replace both front tyres at the same time and due to budget I'm restricted to the following:

Falken ZE 512

Falken GRB FK 451

Yokohama S306

Or

Pirelli Pzero Nero (bit over budget though)

All are from blackcircles.com and come fully fitted, balanced etc.

Cheers everyone.

Matt

If it was me mate I would go for the yoko's mate, I had them on one of my cars once mate and had no complaints about them.

I was thinking of the Yokos as one of my mates has good things to say about them.

The S306s are £156.36 all in and the Pzeros are £164.88 all in. For that I get VAT included, delivery to an approved fitter one minute's drive away from my place, fitted, balanced, valves etc

There's Kumho Ecsta Sport KU 31s for £128.32 all in but didn't know much about them so wasn't sure if they'd be any good.

I'd use Camskills or mytyres but I'd have to get them delivered somewhere with someone to sign for them and then find a fitter who'd be willing to fit them for me.

I wouldn't opt for either of those Falkens - do they do the FK452's in the size you're after? Failing that the Toyo T1-R's are highly rated....

Chris

Toyo's are good as well but heard not too great in the wet, had a set on my last car but stuck to the road like nothing else, so don't know where people get don't handle well in wet.

After 6K miles on the front their wet weather ability is

Wouldnt go for Falkern 451 again. They didnt like brunters in the heat

And close to the thread depth limits they are

I'd go for the pirelli pzero-nero's... I had these on the front of my vRS and they were great :)

 Well just order a Bridgstone ER300 to match my spare wheel. Lets see how they get on through the winter on the front.

Trip round wales anyone :D

Got 19k and two track days out of a set of T1r's and never had any issues with them in any conditions. Best tyres I have ever used.

I was recommended the T1-Rs but they don't do them plus I've heard they tend to wear quite quickly. The Falkens I've only ever heard bad things about but it's worth seeing what other people think of them.

I've got a road trip booked next year to the in-laws and back (2200miles) so I want a set that'll last at least til I get back from that.

If the Kumhos are good I'll prob get them and save myself £30 if not there's only £8 difference in the Pzeros and the S306s so it'll prob be the Pzeros

Matt

Falkens tend to wear badly, I got a set put on in October last year and had to replace them in April of this year.

David

I've got Vredestine sessanta's on the Mondeo st and they are simply fantastic, come top of most tyre tests too.

I've conti's on my vrs and one dunlop tyre, and can't complain about them.

My Falkens are wearing very well (just ticked over 17k on them :D). Conti's?!?! You're having a laugh!

Chris

I've heard conti's are pants but if your using them for normal driving I don't mind.

Cheers for the help guys , I've made my mind up and am going for the Pzero Neros.

£164.88 everything incl. from blackcircles.com done at a garage just down the road.

One other thing though, the spare wheel has that massive yellow sticker on it warning of death, home repossession and a bad s-x lfe if you go over 50mph yet the tyre's W speed rated which means it's good for 3 times that speed. Why? Is it just them covering themselves against court cases?

Matt

(Whoo hoo! I've made it into treble figures!)

yes theyre just covering themselves... it would be fine to go faster on :)

*disclaimer: sharkrider cannot be responsible if peoples tyres blow up and they die ;)

I've just put 4 t1-Rs on and fuel consumption has rocketed - approx 10mpg less than the Pilots before...

Your fuel efficiency's gone down by that much?

Your fuel efficiency's gone down by that much?

I've yet to do a full analysis by feeding in the figures into the spreadsheet but the last few months on the Pilots saw virtually every journey over 50 on the car computer, long journeys over 60 with the record being 78.5 pulling into the car park at Birmingham airport 60 miles after leaving Gloucester. admittedly that was an economy drive. However I now rarely see over 50mpg on the display - and today filled up after a trip to Swindon yesterday (35 miles each way) with the display reading a really paltry 44.7mpg.

It's not all down to the tyre brand admittedly since a worn tyre is going to have less energy sapping tyre squirm.

However that figure of 44.7mpg is the lowest I've ever recorded - compare it to the figures when the Pilots were new - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/attachments/4423d1116093728-skoda-vrs-fuel-consumption.gif - and considering part of the last period was a relatively unstressed dual carriageway journey on cruise control you can see that I seem to be paying heavily for my choice of tyres....

Sorry I don't have a more recent fuel consumption schedule online - I'll sort one out sometime. Note the computer overreads n average by about 3mpg.

Just an update on the new P-zreo Neros I got.

Had them fitted yesterday morning and noticed the difference in ride smoothness and steering responsiness straight away. Can't believe the difference to the Michelins that were on there before, it honestly feels like I'm driving another car.

Just my opinion. :)

my spares been good for speeds around 130mph

on track offcourse

I had a shock the other night. On a run down to Plymouth I noticed the Roomy's MPG had dropped to below 40mpg on the computer. A bit alarmed I stopped at a serivces and had a think. As it was reading -4 degrees out i realised that the temparature would have lowered the tyre pressures, but would it effect it that much?

When I checked they were all down to 28 from 34 so I put them back up to 34 and 32 (Front /Rear) and got an averagew of 46 for the rest of the journey.
