Kerosene anyone?

Featured Replies

Just a quick thread to see if anyone has run ther car off kerosene?

aviation fuel?? lmao, it wont last long, it burns far too hot for a petrol engine and requires very high compression ratio's

I used to mix in 10% blue avgas when I was running a high compression Chevy small block (5.7l v8). Ran fine on the mix...

Think you mean in a diesel - I think that US avgas can be used but never tried it.....

Or do you mean paraffin (kerosene in the US/Canada/Australia)? Old Nuffield and Ferguson tractors ran on paraffin but IIRC they had a double fuel system - they had to be be started on petrol after which you switched to paraffin.

Don't know if a paraffin engine would pass the MOT exhaust test, though...

You can run a diesel on parafin. but it will smoke white and smell dodgy. ANy police cars following will pull you up and request your tanks to be dipped!

I would rather use biodiesel ;)

Yes I mean in a diesel

Kero is almost like diesel, very close. It just has less oil in it. It will run perfect in a diesel but you need to add some oil or you might cause premature wear on the pump and injectors long term due to less lubrication. The fumes from a jet smell the exact same as an exhaust from a diesel car lol

We use a high Kerosene/diesel mix as shipping fuel in the diggers we make at work. It does smell a little different, and the engines don't run as well, as it leaks past the injector pump seals a little, so you don't get as good injection pressure/patter, and lower performance. It isn't as good in the cold ether, so you'd need to add something to help that.

err, no they dont.

I remember those, the old TVO (?) system, does that mean you are as old as me?

I think thats right, from what i've been told you can run a petrol engine on kerosene but the engine needs to be hot before the fuel source is switched over, and it would probably run like a pig. Not sure if modern computer controlled engines would work too well though!

err, no they dont.

The plane you must have been on wasn't running kero then. The last plane i was on had a distinct similiar smell i get from my car when started cold. Even the kero itself smells like being at the pumps. Diesel and Kero are almost the same.

So have you run yours on kerosene then?

So have you run yours on kerosene then?

No, don't want to damage the injectors. I know this old guy who is very tight with money and used kero 100% in his diesel astra and the engine seemed to run the same with no smoke and other times he would mix it with diesel. I'd say his injectors would be short lived.

Some of the lads on TDICLUB run jet A fuel in their TDI's, apparently one guy has ran 100% for 80k with no probs.

...does that mean you are as old as me?

No idea, but I'm definitely among the more mature Briskodians - 54 next time
