Feeling the Turbo Kick in

Featured Replies

Recently purchased my vRS, just wondering if you should feel the turbo push you into your seat when you put your foot down, or its a slight push into your seat.

Can you feel it more in lower gears than higher?

Reason I ask is I want to make sure mine is working properly and I dont really know much about turbos as its my first one.

Cheers.

Yup, the 'kick' is part of the fun ;)

Just feed the power in slowly on corners to keep below the turbo, then on the straight enjoy!

*misses turbo from Mk1*

cheers for the swift reply, do you know what rpm the turbo should kick in?

car is standard.

Did you come from an NA car or a TDI. You can feel the turbo kick in but no where near as much as a TDI for example. Mine was progressive compared to my PD150 Bora, but no where near a linear at my A4 2.0TFSI

I have a standard VRS and I find at about 3500 rpm it picks up quite pleasantly:orb_cool:

a standard car makes full torque by about 1800rpm and holds it to about 5500rpm so you won't feel a big hit in the mid range as its simply not there, once remapped you'll have more mid range urge.

:iagree:

Get it mapped and feel the real difference :)

Although I love my vRS and wouldn't change it, I still feel that it isn't as quick as some people think.

There is a mild shove in the back which then stays pretty much constant until just above 5500rpm, but very rarely do I think 'Wow!'.

I guess I'm just going to have to save up for a remap.

Oh, you will with the remap. Doesnt cost that much either.

the standard car isn't particularly quick, and the response is well mannered as described above, with peak torque available from about 2000rpm if everything is in order.

Get a remap and the picture is very different, the difference is surprising - not wildly quick, but much more how the car should have been from the outset.

Traction does then become a problem in lower gears though, unless conditions are perfect.

(Unfortunately I've been spoilt for too long by 4wd Cosworth performance where the stage1 remap is closer to 300bhp than 200 and traction is no problem ever, and puts a big :D:D on your face every time )

I can imagine that would be a problem as this morning the ESP light was twittering away all the way to 60 in second this morning on my bog standard car.

Admittedly the roads are a bit greasy today, but even so, with more power I can imaging the heath robinson traction control would struggle a bit.

ah, that's easy fixed.. I switch it off when it's slippery  (best switched off all the time IMO)

It doesn't improve the traction LOL, but it's up to your right foot how much wheelspin you get :)

incidentally, in direct response to the first post - if you are using 95RON UL fuel, try running the fuel out as low as you can, and fill up with decent Super-unleaded. That can make a marked difference. When I bought my vRS I was less than impressed initially, tried 97RON SUL and never looked back, it was soo much better. Worth a try initially :)

Thanks for all the replies! Awesome!

Good to see you guys have the interest I do in the car. my old car was a 1991 MR2, so that had the raw power, but the vRS has got power and luxuries which is what I wanted.

The turbo seems fine then if its kicks in as specified above :-)

I'm getting the cambelt, tensioners, water pump done etc soon, would it be worth looking that the turbo pipe and throttler and make sure they are clean if im getting that work done?

I shall fill the car up with super unleaded when the tank is close to empty. I will have to check the remapping things on the forums as I see there are loads of posts about it.

The vRS is still rapid as standard for the size of the car I reckon.

obviously it doesn't improve traction, its not magic!

what it does though is automatically keep you on the brink of wheel spinning rather than you having to.

Nooo of course it's not magic ;) what i'd intended to imply is it's far from it..

And it does a crap job of keeping you on the brink of wheelspinning too - unless you lift anyway it just shuts the engine down so that the wheelspin stops AND the car slows down before it comes back again, which IMO is worse than the wheelspin itself, your right foot will do a much better job on the whole, hence my preference for switching it off particularly when it's slippery..

Each to their own, my preference is to not have it on, for me it's as useful as a chocolate teapot. The biggest problem of all in the traction stakes is FWD, but that's another story :D

Mine feels slow now, I hate getting used to the speed.

I remember driving mine for the first time after having a 2001 astra diesel 75bhp for 2 years!!

This is problem when getting into performance cars. Standard feels quick for 3 days... then slow. Get a remap. Quick for a while then get used to it.

I can see how people spend thousands on modding cars.

I also think one of the reasons the vRS doesn't have the "fast feel" to it is because in standardish form the exhaust is quite there isn't much induction nose and the car is solid and not that low down.

A friend has a 230bhp 911 targa which I can just about keep up with and his honestly feels SOO much faster due to the massive flat 6 in your ear hole and lower right height.

the esp must be a lot better than the ASR then as if mine eve loses traction other than launching its hardly noticable :)

would be an interesting comparison to make, side by side.. does ESP use the brakes in conjunction with engine torque reduction?
