Please can anyone tell me if it is possible, by inspection or engine number, to tell if a VRS engine is Euro 3 or Euro 4?

yeh the code is stamped on the engine, think its hidden by the gearbox and is not really accessible.

Best bet is too look at the registration document, or the sticker under the boot carpet. Post 2005/6 will be BLT

Look at the timing belt cover and there should be a sticker on there.
