Watching this fella in 1984 on the RAC set the wheels in motion for my Skoda life.....

scan0005.jpg

After that it was Skoda only from the first 1986 120L to my latest Favorit Estate (but i still own a Rapid 136 and Snotty,my 1977 "120L")

My signature has my history of Skoda cars, the story behind them are as follows.

120 LSE. Bought at a time when I didn't have a car, or the money to buy one, about 1997 I think. The car belonged to an aquaintance who phoned me up one day and asked if I would be interested in buying it. I politely turned him down (not cause it was a Skoda but because I thought I couldn't afford it) then he said £50. A bit of thought (about 2 seconds) I agreed to buy it. Most unreliable car I've ever owned, spent more time repairing it and trying to sort the cooling system and electrics out than anything else........ But I loved it, just such a great little car to drive, even if it did scald me when it overheated on the motorway one night. No word of a lie when I walked away from the scrappie (the overheat had damaged the engine quite badly) I had tears in my eyes :o

When my sister was after a car she looked at all the usual suspects (Ford, Vauxhall etc.) but couldn't get the kind of deal she wanted on the type of car she wanted. I suggested she looks at Skoda, at the time they had a deal on where by it was really low interest (IIRC about 3%) and 3 years free servicing and bits. Her Felicia is still her car 7 years on.

MkIa Octavia ticked all the boxes I had, diesel, good price, good spec for the money and a nice car to drive.

MKII vRS, that ticked all the boxes again, although I did look at a couple of other cars, for the money and my priority (POOOOOOWWWWWWEEEEEERRRRRR) there wasn't really much to chose. Focus ST was a bit too full on for my tastes, the vRS is a bit more stealthly and, admitedly from other people who have driven/own an ST, the better every day car.

Mine is a bit of a story too -

My dad bought one back in the 80's before I was born, and then had a 2 CV, though when he started getting a bigger family he went back to an Estelle.

He then moved onto a 1990 G reg Favorit, which he had for 3 years, and then traded up to a K reg Favorit. He had that for 2 years and then moved onto an M reg Favorit LXiE in White (re-appears later :) ). Shortly after he bought a Skoda Estelle for mum (around 1995). He then bought a 1996 1.3 Felicia GLXi and mum had the M reg Favorit.

Later he had an accident in the Felicia on the ice which he walked away from - a head on into a wall. he then went on to other makes (doh! and hasn't turned back - though he still enjoys driving mine :) )

Even though the whole way through school people took the mick as "my parents had a skoda!" I couldn't care - I loved them.

We kept the Favorit until I was 17 (2002) and that became my first car which I learnt to drive in. It was very loyal and I put 30K on it and passed it onto my sister (had about 130K on the clock!)

I moved onto an R reg Felicia 1.3 in Burgundy, which I got for £2200 in 2004, with just 25k on the clock. I unfortunately crashed not only once (went back to the favorit for a while) but twice and the second time it was written off.

That moved me onto a Blue P reg 1.6 Felicia, which was a right mess. I tidied it up and kept it for a year or so and then bought my current Felicia 1.6 in Silver.

I think I will always have a Skoda - you can't beat them for reliability (The Favorit had 141K and was still going before it was scrapped), value for money, or the fact that you can usually beat a lot of rivals off the line ;)

I think Skoda first came 'on my radar' in approx 1989 , when there was a road test of the Rapid Injection Coupe in Auto Express magazine. I was driving a VW Beetle 1303 at that time , and I toyed with the idea of buying a Rapid , as I was used to rear engined handling (and fun!) by then , and I figured it would be affordable. Unfortunatly , I talked myself out of it (no local dealer , what happens if something goes wrong , long treks for a service etc) I went and bought a Mk4 Escort instead , which promptly burned its whole wiring loom out when it was 3 days old...ho hum!

I think the next time I really noticed Skodas was when the Felicia was released , as the garage over from my work had got the Skoda franchise at that time , and I took a test drive in their 1st one , on an N reg plate. I was really impressed by the car , but wasnt looking to buy a new car at that time (having too much fun in my Capri 2.8i!!) The next year I sat in the Felicia L&K at the motor show in Earls Court , I couldnt beleive how awesome it was inside , with the leather seats and all , a really great looking car!

Anyways , fast forward to 2001 , I was driving another Capri by then (a 280) and was getting that 'I need a new car' feeling (which should be familiar to all on here!!) so I went down to the Skoda garage , where I spied 2 cars I liked , a 1997 Subaru Impreza Turbo , and a 1999 Octavia Slxi 1.8T , both for £9995. The Scooby had the image and the power , however the Skoda was much nicer inside (Cd , Leather , heated seats etc) , it was a rediculously low milage and was in much better nick than the Impreza , so , after a brief test drive it was mine! That was my 1st Skoda , but it didnt last long , as I had seen pictures of the new vRS and I had to have one , so approx 4 months after buying the Slxi , it was traded in for a brand new vRS Octy , in silver , which I ran for 2 years and adored , a pity that financial reasons meant it had to go.....

Im currently driving a Fabia 1.4 8V Comfort , which was a 'distress purchase' as the Lancer Evo I had at the the time was draining me of money (sound familiar?...lol!) I was really expecting to hate it , with its cassette player and its wheeltrims , but , Ive really grown fond of the lil thing , Ive owned her for over 2 years now , and I'm still impressed! Okay , its never going to win any traffic light grands prix (or impress the layyydees! lol) but its been a really good little car , albeit with a few problems , that are now (touch wood) behind it!

As for the future...who knows , Mk1 Fabia vRS? Mk1 Octavia vRS , New Fabia? Mk 2 Octy vRS , or L&K TDI?...Anything is possible with me...lol watch this space!!!

I got my 98 felicia 1.3mpi in march 2006 after realising that my Rover 214 was loosing oil like the exxon disaster.

I got it for nothing from a guy at work with less than 60k on the clock who delivered it to my door with 2 months tax and test. I give him £30. It needed a few things done though as the brakes were binding and the front shocks were rusted to bits.

I have found it a really good car and well equipped with sunroof, power steering, electric mirrors etc and have rattled it up to 90k with no problems. I did change the chain though as it sounded like baghdad under operation shock and awe when you revved it.

I like the simplicity to it as there isnt a lot to go wrong that cannot be prevented with a bit of grease or carb cleaner and the heater is excellent in these winter months

My dad get hooked in two ways,

1) he had an old Fiat Uno which the fiat garage could never get right. one day he was going up a dual carriadge way and a Favorit over took him.

2) Many years ago TOP GEAR did an episode where they covered up the badge on a Octavia so people did not know it was a Skoda. there were two other cars there and they got a focus group to pick the best one. and they picked the Octavia.

now 20 years years on our family as had:-

5 x Favorits

5 X Felicias

3 X Fabias

2 X Vrs Fabias

As a biker my cars have only been a way of getting my tools to site (bricklayer).I went through a succession of old ford estates, metros and the like, then I had a mini pick up which was brilliant fun. That was sold for a lot of money to a German guy who spent even more on it.With my money in my pocket I fancied something different so I bought a Lada Niva 4x4.That nearly bankrupt me with 16mpg and a daily trip of 70 miles to work .Because I was now broke :DI looked around for a cheap estate and guess what , I bought a Favorit,Since then I have had a Fav and a Felicia my wife has had a Favorit and a Felicia. My wife now has a Superb and I have a L&K Felicia (newly rebuilt motor after cam belt break),so I think we may have the bug

Ohh! Err Missus! I think an edit may be in order

 I can't see the original post. I personally think my Favorit is quite spacious as I'm 6'3" and can happily sit behind the wheel. I can't see what you could get that would be more spacious in the same form factor of car with such cheap insurance etc.
