Ultimate Driving Craft

Featured Replies

I've just got hold of this DVD and would recommend it as a good introduction into advanced driving and building up a commentary. For the more experienced drivers, it seems a bit tame (no offsiding or straight lining bends for instance), but as with all these things, there's something for everyone and the 999 drive with commentary is particularly good!

Thanks Chris, I think I may invest in that.

I've finally pulled my finger out and joined the Kent RoSPA group.

Good news, Ant. Give me a shout if you're ever over this side of the M25 and fancy going out for a drive. :D

Cheers Chris. Now ordered.

IMO straight-lining and off-siding are not "introductory advanced" techniques that I'd be happy seeing taught in a video. I'll only use them on roads I know pretty well already so that I know where to look to see if they're safely possible.

I agree entirely, but the DVD is pitched as the must have for *all* drivers, whereas I think it is actually pitched more as an introduction to advanced driving. My expectation was therefore to see a top-notch class-1 drive employing all the techniques I've been lucky enough to observe first hand, rather than demoing an IAM/RoSPA level drive. The only time they were used was in the 999 response drive which I could have happily watched a whole DVD of :D:rofl:

As a follow up to this thread, if you want to see some of the more advanced techniques, such as straight-lining, off-siding, overtaking and night-driving, I can highly recommend Bespoke's Advanced Roadcraft DVD.

After watching this, I'm sure I did learn stuff and will learn more, but it's more about doing commentary driving than about using speed and positioning sense, which is equally important I think.

Yeah I think the idea is that the commentary tells you what he's doing so you get to see some of the techniques he's employing as he gradually builds it all in. The Bespoke DVDs on Roadcraft and Advanced Roadcraft are also very good, imho :D

I found the 2nd watch of the Ultimate Driving Craft DVD worthwhile.

Part of the thing was that, on the straights, he was picking out stuff where I would be looking, but that I couldn't see in the picture (with a 32" widescreen set), and calling some but not all side turnings.
