So Denis is flogging tyres @ 4p each ???

i would have been there but got set back by a slight arguement with a round about

:D four wheel drive traction...eh.... :D

Doubtful , he wasn't even selling raffle tickets @4p each !

4x4 is only necessary if you live on a farm or in a country prone to 11months of snow......

it is heavy.. ineffcient and removes feel/precison from the handling.... unless they find a way of reversing the haldex so its RWD until required I will not be bothering.... even if the new 350hp RS3 does look tempting.....

Can be done with a Haldex controller if you have the money for one. :)

Yes. For Matchbox cars. But currently out of stock, Jane. BTW, do you still want my address? ;)

Be fair Paul , it may have to mount a kerb now and again , when dropping the children off at school !

seriously?

cos i will be looking for a 4wd shell 6spd box haldex and controller if this is genuine... have been planning a rwd octy for some time... will it handle 500hp?

I'd seriously consider the 4x4, if it didn't have such a godawful interior. It's truly repellant. Since I sit in that environment for anywhere between 2 and 3 hours per day, I'd like to be sat somewhere comfortably and aesthetically pleasing.

Yes, I'd like four wheel drive, but would I sacrifice vRS spec for Elegance spec and 4WD? No.

I don't really like front wheel drive, and if they did do a vRS with 4WD, then I'd definately go for it, but I could never own the 4X4 Turbo model. Fair dos to those who are happy with the 4X4 though.

even if the new 350hp RS3 does look tempting...

I'll believe it when I see one on the road. Autocar are not the most reliable source for "exclusive" new model news (no, it's not photoshopped, honest!)

BTW, do you still want my address? ;)

If you want the "you-know-what", which btw will NOT be delivered in a plain brown wrapper.

haldex controllers cannot give you rear wheel drive, the most they can give you is a 50/50 split. the haldex is basically a clutch on the rear which engages the rear wheels if necessary. the only way i can se of converting it is to somehow remove the drive shafts and cover the holes and replace the haldex with a normal differential

about the interior's, the only real difference is the leather and light centres to the seats isn't it?? where the elegance has plain dark grey like the golf's

and the skoda 4x4 system isn't that heavy, its adding about 70Kg to a car which weighs about 1500Kg's anyway

Well I like my 4x4, OK its not as quick on the track in the dry as some of the tweaked Rs's but how often are we on track. We had a fairly light hearted bimble around Bruntingthorpe & I cant remember seeing droves of RS's passing us so its not that bad. Last time I was at Castle Coombe it was damp & I didnt get a single bit of wheelspin unlike the FWD drive cars.

Re the haldex controller I have heard similar stories about something that is being marketed in Germany for altering the balance of front/rear drive although I believe this might be aimed more at off road/Rally cars but I guess it would work on the track.

Personally I still believe that in the hands of Mr Average driver which most of us are Four Wheel drive will give better performance & the more power you go for the more it becomes an advantage.

Lastly dont forget, a few years ago Audi dominated the touring cars with Four Wheel drive so just maybey its the answer for track as well although I guess you would need deep pockets to develop it, probably Pauls idea of a RWD special is the most economical way of achieving the quickest track Skoda.

Strange thread  I bought what I liked and prefered, for my all round use, I drove a 4X4 excellent car but personaly for my purposes preffered the full size hatch area of a standard Octavia that I was used to with my SLX before which was fully kitted. I bought my car for its full package bumpers, power suspension, looks , colour and drivablity I have no intention of modifying it to look or go any different it suits my use alround and for my kind of driving.

Dont get me wrong I like a car with as many toys as possible (I have a cigerette lighter but dont use it ;) )and if a new model came out with 4x4 RS or not if the boot are was not too restricted I would base a decision on both model presentations and kiting at the time.

I have nothing against 4X4's at all it is a great acheivment of Skoda to fit that unit to the car theres a lot of re-work involved I have seen it first hand at the factory on the pre face lift Octavia.

If the 4X4 model suits someones needs more than any other model spec thats fine, in my opinion no model in the range is any better to any other just different.

John

You are right about the Haldex controller and the 50:50 split, bengie. For those with the money, the controller I was talking about is here.

Plug: There are lots of other interesting sites and information like this in our Links section so why not have a browse when you are fed-up playing Penguins.

Doesn't the 4x4 have a multi-link rear suspension setup versus the vRS's ever so sophisticated torsion beam ?

Correct. Well reminded

If anyone is really interested in converting an RS to Haldex i've got the whole set up from a R32 as new.

BTW don't ask the obvious question. ;)
