Factory-fit towbar for the Scout

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm that a factory-fit towbar is now available for the Scout.

If so, do you know the order code and approximate price?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have recently made some enquiries and was told that yes, it is available but that it's a special order and around £800!!! :o

It sounds like they are only offering a detachable tow-bat and everything swings out of the way and is hidden when not in use.

hi rkenny, have a look on the skoda website ,octy scout tow-bar there, but you can buy electrics much cheaper elsewhere

Hi, Getting a scout on saturday, and enquired about detachable tow bar. £941.42 fitted, 6 hours labour. End of enquiry

I think the way to do this would be to pay the money for the Skoda electrics and get a cheaper tow bar fitted. That way the warranty would not be in as much doubt if anything electric failed at the back of the car.

The downside is that the Skoda tow bar is detachable, comes with a plate to cover up the hole and the electrics swing out the way also - all things a non-dealer fit might not have.

That price is scary! I know you can get a factory fit towbar for the basic 4 x 4. It costs around £500 with twin elecrics. So was hoping for something similar for the Scout. Dealer fit is a problem I think especially for the Scout because it has rear parking sensors. Some dealers struggle to fit towbars properly in my experience.

A friend has ordered a Passat and his towbar is to cost £840 dealer fit. So the price you quote seems a bit high. As you say forget it!

Not just the Scout being a new model. I have heard that some of the problems are due to the raised height of the Scout and special manufacture needed to get the finished article to the right 'standard' height?!?

I have just made another enquiry with CDF Towbars, this is the reply I had:

CDF: "Witter have a fixed and a detachable towbar available now. To supply and fit a fixed flange towbar with single 12n electrics and standard 50mm towball cost inc vat £215.00. The detachable towbar with single 12n electrics cost inc vat £305.00. We are a mobile service fitting at your home or works

Thanks again for your enquiry"

I think I know who I will be using, just a thought maybe we can all club together & try & get a deal? I will find out a cost for those who want twin electrics - watch this space!

What do you reckon?

By the way these are the guys that Skoda - Rugby use

Good work wilkopilko! Detachable will be best for the Scout I think. Also a quote for twin electrics would be good.

Do you know if they cover the central Scotland area where I live?

Arh that maybe a problem it seems that they are Midlands based only CDF Homefit Towbars Ltd.

What a pity :(.

You can always drop an email to Marilyn at CDF Towbars [[email protected]].

Its the skoda electrics that are expensive the bar is approx 170 quid.

Have done just that! Thanks again. Will tell you what they come up with.

Ok,

CDF charge £40.00 extra for twin electrics.

Got a really quick response from them! See below:

"Hi Robert

So sorry, we are based in Coventry and only do a 30-40 mile radius, I think your out of our area !!! Do you ever come to the Midlands? The cost in case you do travel down is £345.00

Thanks for your enquiry

Marilyn"

This was for detachable with twin electrics!!! Pity I'm so far away.

Even if you consider £70 in fuel for a round trip it's still a £400.00 saving!

There must be an equivelant independant Towbar fitter closer to home?

When we were down at Balbirnie Park CC site in October we nipped up to Grants Caravans in Dundee. Someone parked next to us at the dealers enquired who fitted our towbar to the vRS as he was looking for one for his new Octy and was put off with dealer prices.

He had sourced an independant fitter in the Dundee area, he was paying about the £350 mark for a removable bar and twin electrics - less than we paid for a fixed bracket with twin electrics (£380 all arranged by our dealer before collection by a local firm to Aberdeen).

I'm sure he said Grants had put him onto them. I would give them a call.

Try a company called Indespension. They operate nationwide and have a branch in Milngavie near Glasgow: tel 01419563055. Got a quote from them for an Octavia Scout of £450 (detachable and twin electrics). They use Brink towbars and I'm sure the Fabia I range will be covered. (I tried to access the Brink website but it is down at the moment).

Hope this helps.

thanks i will try them :)

I have just had a Witter tow bar fitted by an independant fitter in Sheffield.

The dealer quoted £698 for a Skoda one, but I got it for a fitted price of £405.

One really important point to note is that if you get a quote for a tow bar, the scout needs additional electrical bits fitting.

Sorry, but now for the techy bit...................

The rear parking sensors need switching off and the vehicles ESP needs the mode switching to use the Trailer Stability Sensing mode. This kit is an extra which is required in addition to the twin electrics but you should be able to get one for between £80 and £100 (that's why the dealer electrics cost so much....).

Once this kit is fitted, you then need to tell the car's 'brain' that it has a tow bar. Either you can take it to the dealer or you can reprogram the settings (about ten minutes) yourself using a VAG Com. The details of the settings changes come with the extra kit.

Although the disabling of the parking sensors is a nice to have, the changing of the ESP to trailer stability mode is really important for towing. As the car comes with a trailer stability mode option it is a shame not to use it when you are towing.

Buy the your Scout in Sweden, Towbar is fitted here as standard. No one here would bay a stationwagon in this country if a towbar wasen't fitted as standard.

Mine cost £350 factory fitted for a FL Scout but only road lights wired in 13 pin socket.:rotz:

Westfalia towbar with single electrics and detachable hitch, fitted, £340. But if special wiring needed for stability control & disabling parking sensors another £200 or so according to my Chesterfield supplier.Same towbar used across Octavia II range.
