Whine from engine

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to Briskoda

I have a 2.0 petrol engined superb which I had a new water pump fitted under warranty in March, the garage advised a cam belt change since it was showing signs of wear (25000 miles) since it would be taken off anyway. I became aware of a whine above 30 mph as soon as I drove away.

The engineer said several days later it's the teeth on the cam belt and would disappear over time. Several months later I returned as it hadn't disappeared and the engineer said he didn't know what it was but could possibly be the clutch.

The Superb has now done 34000 miles and still sounds the same. Has anyone come across this before?

Cambelts whine when they are too tight....

rotodiesel.

Is it a whine or a squeal?

It is a faint whine which is more noticable in fifth gear.

If it's doing it at speed and not stationary it sounds gearbox or turbo related.

I became aware of a whine above 30 mph as soon as I drove away.

Are you sure its not coming from the seat on your left? That is where most of the whining in my car comes from.

I would definitely get the cambelt checked - it may be too tight.

It's unlikely to be a turbo problem, as the 2.0 petrol doesn't have one....

Just had another thought, could it be coming from the radio?

Try driving with it off just to rule it out.

I think an over tight cam belt would have stretched a bit in 10k miles, though it was my initial thought.

If the sound increases with road speed, then the engine can usually be discounted as the source and vice versa.

I'd still get them to check the cam belt tension, especially if the noise started after they changed it.

Another possibility is the water pump they changed. The factory fit has a plastic impeller (I think) and it's replaced with a metal bladed one.

The main points are road speed vs engine speed, the noise started after the pump was changed and get a mechanic to have a listen.
