Bash!

Typical! Just got over 2 days off with man-flu. First day back in the office on Friday and , collected a Passat in my rear bumper. I stopped at a roundabout as I couldn't be sure of what was coming. He didn't.... "I thought you'd gone" was more of less first thing he said. Though I wouldn't rate it as a hard impact, I wouldn't have said it was a gentle nudge either. The car ran forwards a couple of feet after the impact.

I don't think I have to explain the joys of trying to exchange details/telephone numbers in the dark and pouring rain after 7PM on a Friday night.

I looked at the car in the dry on Saturday. It's definitely going to need paintwork. Lot's of scratches in the back bumper, done to the primer/plastic. No cracks, holes or major deformities apparent though.

That's rough mate - thank Goodness no-one hurt - and a bit of cosmetic damage only...

Hope you get it sorted out soon, as god as new....

Sorry to hear about the accident, glad to hear no-one was hurt.

Is there a bit of an epidemic of members getting rear-ended / hit a round-abouts lately?

make sure the estimators check the boot floor and behind the bumper ,as they have a habit of bending the rear chassis legs , even with a gentle nudge

This is the bit I'm worrying about. I managed to find a nude piccie of a Fabia's rear end on Stu's website. There's a rather substantial x-member that sits just underneath the boot by the looks of it.

I think/hope it's just the sudden deterioration in the weather that's done it. People haven't learned to properly slow down after rampaging about all Summer.

It's not that, it's just stupidity.

I have just done a 500 mile round trip on the m-ways, and the amount of idiotic drivers that insist on pinching your safe stopping gap is untrue.

Thank god for uprated brakes and a sense of awareness.

I may not be the best driver in the world, but I have never rear ended anyone.( Ooerr missus.!)

you want to try it when your carrying 28 tonnes of paper, and running in total at 44 tonnes. NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD AT ALL :thumbdwn:

That's 100% his fault. Go to the hospital this evening and explain what happened and that you're suffering from pain between the shoulder blades and a stiff neck.

Whether or not you make a whiplash claim (and given the type of accident you had, I most certainly would), you should do this now, as your medical records will later be checked to see if you attended the hospital or not.

I had a similar accident in June in my old car, and the £1900 compensation I received helped me to buy my Skoda.

Thanks for the advice but erm... NO! If he'd stove in the rear end and punted me onto the A40, then probably, yes I'd have whiplash, amongst other multiple vehicle related injuries and my Mum would be wondering if I'd clean kegs on before going to hospital.

...but it didn't happen, so no, no, no ,no ,no!

In all seriousness, people can get quite severe spinal injuries from 5mph rear shunts. Don't blame me if you start aching in a few days time and you haven't got a leg to stand on legally because you never went to the hospital soon enough. I went the day after my accident as my friend (who is a personal injury solicitor) advised me to, even though I felt fine. I had no intention of making a PI claim, but I went anyway as he'd nagged me.

I didn't start having any symptoms until almost a week later, at which point I could barely turn my neck, but if I hadn't 'pretended' to be sore the next day, I wouldn't have got the compensation that I deserved. Now, 6 months later, I am still suffering, and I have been told to expect aches and pains for another 6 months.

I won't bother offering you any advice in future as you clearly know everything.

No they can't. That's walking speed

Does he chase ambulances?

You a real doctor? Funny, because you don't seem to know much about anatomy. A little less time fiddling with your motor and a bit more time with your head in the Lancet might be of benefit.

5mph is the universally accepted speed at which whiplash injuries are likely to occur. There have been many reports on this in the Lancet and the BMJ.

its people who make claims for a little bit of whiplash and the where there is blaim there is a claim culture that drive up insurance premiums.......

100% agree.

Not strictly true. It's the people that don't look where they're going and ram into people giving them whiplash injuries that drive up insurance premiums.

As for the "a little bit of whiplash" assessment, is it something you've suffered from personally? My injuries were described by the specialist as "mild" whiplash: in real terms this has meant for me 6 months of waking up in the morning with severe pain in my shoulder and lower back; aching in my legs and buttocks whenever I sit for more than 10 minutes at a time; and having to stop playing golf, which is my favourite pastime. Any suggestion that I should not be entitled to the compensation I received for these injuries which occurred in an accident that was in no way my fault is frankly insulting. I would happily give back the money to undo the pain and inconvenience the old biddy caused me when she decided to ram my car.

Thats not very friendly:mad:

Aye, I'm an arsehole like that. ;)

Not wishing to open a can of worms, but..........

I slipped a disc whilst being stood still.

I rolled a car 5 times at silly speeds and walked away unhurt.

I fell down the stairs and all I hurt was the stupid cat.

I turned sideways and tore a muscle in my neck.

Injuries depend on stance, posture, muscle rigidity, and general relaxation of the body.

It is amazing how resilient and yet how fragile the human body is.

Let's not bicker girls, just be thankful that the op is not injured.

Also depends upon age Graham :D

It's possible I might fall off my computer chair in shock at what happened to me thread and bust me coxix too!

Mr Imperator, reading your follow-up posts, I can see that you may indeed have deserved some compensation. That's not obvious from the tone of your initial post though. The tone of that is very much in the "carry me faster to hospital with the blue lights on" variety. ;)

I was just trying to give you the benefit of my experience - that symptoms don't necessarily present themselves straight away, but that if you haven't visited the hospital within a couple of days of the accident, you will not be able to claim even if you do suffer from whiplash later on. Without the early hospital visit, there is no evidence to attribute your injuries to your RTA. Visiting the hospital doesn't mean you have to claim - it just leaves you with the option should you wish to in a week or two.

Those rear crash bars are very strong, and if they are as strong as the front then it shouldnt be too bad. I rear ended a van on the motorway at about 80ish, this was after slowing down a hell of alot. The van was doing about 50 tops.Pics below show that i infact cracked the crash bar in 3 places :S
