Have been having a good search around on the forum but have not really found much that explicitly answers my question.

I've had my 07 Plate Fabia vRS for around 8 months now, and am still absolutly chuffed with her, the insurance is abit of a sting, but at 19 with the declared mod I guess I canne complain.

Anywho I have just got her back from the garage yesterday after having the turbo replaced after I blew it up. Under warrenty luckily. Now, I have been looking to lower her, and fit some after market alloys for sometime now.

I was looking to lower her 40mm on H&R Springs, and fit some Golf R32 Replica Alloys. The new R32 alloys to be exact. Performance Alloys offer them in 18X8 Fitment, fitted with 215X35 R18 Toyo Proxies. Speedo wise, this gives an inaccuracy of 0.8%.

Now my question is having seen this tyre fitment before I know the sidewall is next to nothing. I have to ask what effect does this have on the handling? Will it be radically different? Will it make the car unstable or just generally make her less fun to drive?

I know 17's are the norm with Fabia vRS's and very few people have 18's. I am guessing there is a reason for this?

Your advice would be very much appricated.

They will be heavy for a start, especially being replicas.

They shouldn't really effect the handling that much but you will get a worse ride and a lot more road noise as the tyres will be like rubber bands.

Just out of intrest mate how much is your insurance???? I'm 19 and have 1yrs ncb with an 04plate fabia vrs, mines was just under £900 which i though was great:)

On topic I have 17s on my fabia and I've just slammed it on fk coilovers, handling is overall alot better, mind u I havent had a proper dry day to test it out properly.

If your goin for 18s then lowering it by 40mm wouldn't make much difference to the naked eye if u get me? get 17s and slam it on coilovers trust me u wont be dissapointed, Im still smiling from how mean mines looks from the front!!!

Well it was 1200 quid with Admiral with 2 Years NCB, but after I declared my remap it went up 700 quid, so 1900. :(

wouldnt of bothered declaring the remap tbh, the only way they can find it is by hooking a computer upto it, and they aint gonna do that

One of my friends lost control of his car and narrowly missed having it written off - and whilst it was being held at the garage awaiting major repairs an assessor from his car insurance company came to have a look at it to make the claim. They discovered that it had been remapped and refused to pay up. Leaving him with a bill of over 6k.

Trust me, companys will do what ever they can to avoid a pay out - especially when your talking big money; and its really not difficult to tell if a car has been remapped. When it comes to being legal at the expense of being abit poorer, or being illigal and risk being thousands of pounds out of pocket or worse; I think I know what I'd rather.

As somebody on here once said insurance is financially as important as mearly putting fuel in your car - if you cant afford to run it; you probably shouldnt have it.

This is exactly right. What people do is up to them but if you run a remap undeclared you are asking for grief.

i would go a bit further than that,if you run any mod without declaring it you are being a bit daft,it could leave your car uninsured.

I have even told mine about the bits being painted next week,the bonus being they noted it,my premium didn't go up,and in the event of an accident they will put it back to the way i had it:thumbup:

mine insurance is 1400 with 0 no claims, and i am 19 bit much but worth it, they wanted 1100 for a 1.4 corsa sri so cant complain really!

It's about the unsprung weight (or, more properly, the unsprung mass) is the mass of the suspension, wheels or tracks (as applicable), and other components directly connected to them, rather than supported by the suspension.

The unsprung weight of a wheel controls a trade-off between a wheel's bump-following ability and its vibration isolation. Bumps and surface imperfections in the road cause tire compression--which induces a force on the unsprung weight. In time, the unsprung weight then responds to this force with movement of its own. The amount of movement is inversely proportional to the weight - a lighter wheel which readily moves in response to road bumps will have more grip when tracking over an imperfect road. For this reason, lighter wheels are often sought for high-performance applications. In contrast, a heavier wheel which moves less will not absorb as much vibration; the irregularities of the road surface will transfer to the cabin through the geometry of the suspension and hence ride quality is deteriorated.
