Brrrrrrrrrrr - Heater Fan Noise

Featured Replies

My heater fan no longer runs smootly :( This time last year with the weather turning colder I noticed that higher revs produces quite a lot of bassy reverb. It's almost as if my Furby wants to become a hovercraft  In the wamer weather, less revs are usually required so it doesn't trouble me. But being Autumn/Winter now, I'm getting annoyed again (along with all the little cold weather squeaks it has).

Are the bearings shagged or have I got FOD in there? Is it a complete **** to fix?

It'll be leaves in the blower. Easy to fix but involves taking the glovebox off. There's a guide on here telling you how to fix it. Takes about 10 mins. ;)

this happened to me this mornin! weird! was showin up -3.5 on my temp thing, it was making a hell of a racket, the tick niose was still there when i put the blower down to one, however later on in the day when i started the car the blower was back to normal

i'll se what like it is tomorrow... as for the leaves thing....i don't think its that???? :rubchin:saying that if it keeps happenin i'll have to investigate.

stu.

It IS the leaves thing.......I've been on this site a while and seen many threads covering it. It happened to mine and a mates car and i had leaves floating around in the blower casing. They move so the noise comes and goes. Worse at this time of year with all the dead leaves falling off the trees. :(

Guide here. Thanks for the pointer!

Can the fan wear out and run slower than it should run?

I remember when i first got my car i thought the fan on position 1 was quite powerful now position 2 seems quite gentle at times.

yeah i take back my comment, it happened again, did sound a bit leafy:rofl:, but it stopped again as well, i'm gonna have a gander at it this morning.

I'd try pulling the pollen filter out first before taking the glove-box out - see if any leaves etc come out. This might be enough.

It's wierd - you wouldn't think the fan sounding like a V8 Monaro could be caused by leaves. I tried taking my pollen filter out before and yes, a few leaves dropped out (and about 50 bumble bees) but the area where the fan sits is like in a bowl and so you have to get your hand up in there through the recirculation flap to pull them all out. You'll see what I mean with the glovebox off. ;)

yup i can confirm its leaves, i am become somewhat of an expert on diagnosing noisey heaters, i have seen now at least 5 fabias a polo and an ibiza all do the same the noise, each case clearing the leaves worked

I had this and sorted it by running the heater on full blast with the recirc on for ages! I think it must have chopped the leaves up like a ****in Jack Lalanne power juicer as it doesn't happen anymore! :D

You don't actually need to take the glovebox off to get at the fan to clean it out (provided yo have small hands) - simply take the pollen filter out and shove your hand up. Be wary of sharp edges but it is possible.

Job jobbed. Had a bunch of seeds in the pollen filter when the case was dropped. Nothing found when doing the vet job (hand up the backside of...) the fan. Still a little bit vibrate-y but I can live with that. Is there any way of dropping the paper element out of the filter? There may be FOD above I think.

I also managed to fix a related vibration. The plastic underneath the steering column rattles like crazy when the fan is going. If you tighten up all the facia screws, it goes away :)

I've aquired this fan noise also in the last week. it's not that bad and does not increase if I turn the fan speed up but stays constant.

I'll get the gf to stick her hand up there and have a good feel around. :P
