Been taking my wreck to bits today...

Featured Replies

Been kind of busy today - spent more or less 8 hours in it including food breaks... and the day kind of went like this...

1pm: Unclip airbag from steering wheel.. Took bloody ages and one side was so stubborn I ended up ripping the side of the wheel slightly and using a metallic object and a hammer to unclip that side... :grumpy: The spline bolt for the wheel itself was much easier. Out popped wheel, and the loose indicator cluster.

2pm: Finally loose dashboard was able to pop out. Had a couple of bits to move out the way first, but out it came, and is in my car now. Then I started to look at other stuff to remove. I started unbolting various 10mm bolts, 13mm bolts, T20s T30s, T40s... It seemed to go on and on!

3pm: Started to try and rip out the ventilation system. It was a beeyach! SO many T15 torx fittings it was unbelievable! After pinging off various clips it all started to come loose. I started trying to remove everything from the large metallic cross member everything was attached to

4pm: Steering rack removed off cross member but not sure how to detach from steering column... The whole assembly is just sat on the floor of the car now. Vent system still being stubborn. Took a break by unbolting both front seat belt mechanisms. I think someone wants them too! Finally managed to unbolt the metal cross member and threw it out the wreck as hard as I could in anger!

5pm. Suddenly realised with horror the vent system was bolted on from inside the engine bay! Undid two 10mm bolts which held on two vent pipes, they popped off then with a "hissss" (god knows what they were for), then I realised there were two solid metal pipes bolted into the cabin... Didn't even know what size it was!

6pm. Finally found out it was a T40 (process of elimination) I undid and pulled vent unit hard from inside. Then pink fluid started pi55ing all over the cabin, and my tools! NOOOO  Thankfully there wasn't too much I guess that was cooling fluid or something. Once the vent unit was out I was FINALLY able to unbolt the airbag module which is what I'd been after for the last few hours!

7pm. After some food I tidied up and left for home! A bit annoyed everything I did took so long... but there you go! :D

Busy weekend then Jason ;)

List.

  • Nearly all the electrics
  • Most of the dashboard fixings, various metallic bits and bolts
  • All door mounted fittings + some glass
  • Complete PD100 Engine / Gearbox [cough]Paul[cough]
  • Complete exhaust system
  • Bits of trim
  • Steering rack
  • Rear brake calipers/pads
  • ahem... not much else. Boot lid is "almost" in good nick. :D

So there wasn't much you didn't salvage, then?

See, we told you that it just needed a bit of T-cut! ;)

Do, note nearly everything on the list is either internal, or well tucked away in the event of an accident. There isn't ONE undamaged panel, and I mean NOT ONE! But yes, everything inside - fixtures and fittings have all been rescued (fairly) intact!
