Interesting Oil Notice

Featured Replies

In the handbook it says to use VW 505 01 oil with a denotion of ACEA B3 can be used in extreme cases, 505 is synthetic, where B3 is semi synthetic, now surely if B3 isn't any good for a PD engine then they wouldn't suggest you use it under any circumstances?

Is this a con to sell us oil that is 3x more expensive and justify high servicing costs?

I'd doubt it is. I would suggest that the B3 would be the **** I'm out of oil with a light on and i can only get this stuff option.

Eg it will get you home and is better than no oil, but you would be expected to pop into the dealer and get it changed for the right stuff.

It was like the citroen LHM systeme. You must use LHM/LHM+ however in emergencies you could use a light oil (i forget the grade) to get you home.

Once you got back, it was up to the dealers for a flush of the system and new LHM.

Spoke to the guy on parts today and the oil came up, he couldn't be 100% about it, but he felt the fully synth was only spec'd for longevity rather than properties, so effectively as long as you don't run 10/40 past 10k it should be ok, on the other hand someone who i know has a VW pc mixed one oil with another and got a dash load of lights for his effort.

I'd be worried about the ability of the semi to be able to keep lubing the PD injectors.

If it was my car and that was the only oil I could get I'd be going back to doing changed every 5k like I had to in the good old days when cars were more simple.

Use of an oil to non VAG spec will rapidly wear the valve followers and cams (which are too narrow) and then the roller tappets and cams for the unit injectors.

Generic specs such as ACEA and SAE are not detailed enough for this engine - the only oils suitable for a PD diesel are those to VAG specs 505.01, 506.01 and 507.00. For precise application details, see their (lousy) handbook.

A better bet is to use 507.00 exclusively and buy it on the Internet. I got a can of Fuchs 507.00 quite cheaply - no dearer than any other good quality fully synth oil.

Cheers, I'm going to see what spec the GM 5/30 is, I can get it for £16 per 5 litres or less dep on how much I buy.

I can get a 5L can of millers 505.1 oil for that price in a local motor factor before mates rates, so I wouldn't bother trying to change it myself.

cant find a fuchs 0w - 30 oil

with the 507 spec.

are you using 5w - 30.

if so is it allright.

john

507.00 is 5W - 30 whoever makes it. It's fine, but I'll know for sure after another 100k miles.

rotodiesel.

was getting worried.

i use 0w - 30 castrol edge.

the spec is 505 00

which according to handbook

is ok if no dpf fitted.

john

505.00 is not OK in a PD diesel. Minimum spec. oil is 505.01 and they are very different oils.

Castrol Edge 0w30 should be VW506.1 and Edge 5w30 is VW507

Personally I've never heard so much 5h1t about oil quality, I might be wrong, but oil is oil, modern oil is even better, it's different specs are usually for cold and hot protection and how long it resists combustion pollution, I think the VAG ppl are having a laugh here, don't use anything that cost less than £9.99 a litre and don't flush your fuel system cos it rots the rubbers etc, what are they making these engines out of? cheese and pickle?, all oil lubes, if it's thicker then surely it's gonna hang around in the injectors longer and provide lubrication, they all lube, it's almost the same tale as don't use supermarket fuel, why not? it all comes from the same refinery, what companies say they add is what they add, it doesn't break your car if it's not got Optiflyultimatetigergrowl added to it, it's sold as the correct grade and standard that the law requires them to sell and your car to run on.

BTW, this rant isn't in response to your answers, I just think it's all ball, my mate runs his 04 Taxi Passat on anything that's to hand when he needs it, 240k later his car still runs as good as it did when cabs direct delivered it, you can see it's a game of minds, all the other car firms sell and describe their stuff as ACEA A-B etc, but no VAG has to start this 500 series grade oil thing and confuse everyone.

Although I like the car, I really regret giving my money up to such a devious company, won't fix yer car, every part seems to change numbers once a mth, timing belt is a good example, is it 40k 60k 75k 80k cos depending where you look you can get all these answers, mines 60k according to the book, 80k according to the chassis number at the dealers, shall I put a new water pump in, yes good practice, dealer says no cos it's more work, seems more like more work they don't like doing even though they should get extra for it, what does that say?

dont want to argue with you roto.

but my handbook for 85kw superb

1.9 deisel on a 07 plate

states that 505 00 is ok.

so there:P

I rang GSF and asked for oil for a PD engine, would you like the normal stuff or the long life one was the reply?

Minefield, am I reading this right, will any 0/30 5/30 synthetic oil be ok?

There are mistakes in the VAG documentation which make a confused situation worse. The approved oil specs are the ones I listed earlier (Post #5).

It's interesting to see that the valve actuating cams suffer more than the unit injector cams when the lubrication is incorrect - I've seen this before for real. I suspect VAG played very safe with the unit injector cams and roller followers, leaving insufficient space for the valve cams which are too narrow.

It seems to be mainly the 150 PS engines which are affected (these were never fitted to the Superb) so a 130 PS with the correct oil should be OK. VAG documentation is just hopeless.

This situation makes the buying of any used VAG vehicle with a PD engine a real lottery. The dealers don't always put the right oil in.

I've noticed on the Polish Skoda site they are plugging Mobil 1 in the tech section.

Hi Thanks to all who contributed to this interesting thread. I have a Superb 2.5 TDI, March 07, low on oil so needed to top up. Well what a mine field. How am I to know if I have a PD engine or a diesel particulate filter:confused: both of which determine

( apparently ) what grade of oil to to use. The dealer was less than helpful. Many outlets I asked did not know of the 507 oil. Careful trawl through the many pages of the documents that come with car; no it is not a PD and does not have a diesel particulate filter ( I hope ) So 505.00 has gone in and hope for the best!

To drive a car today i think you need a degree in engineering! A simple sticker in the engine bay with the correct information would help.

Regards

John

My mates Passat is running fine with a 1.9 PD engine, over 200k on it, and he uses Fuchs synthetic, and semi if that's all thats about at the time, engine hasn't played up at all.
