Creaking rear suspension

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Over the last few days I've noticed that my rear suspension creaks a lot when going over speedbumps etc. Sounds like it's coming from the O/S shock mount at the back as it's quite a loud noise.

I'm wondering, with all the cr4p on the roads at the moment, could this cause such symptoms?

I'm going to take the Karcher to the rear arches and see if that helps. Also may try lubing up the rear shock mounts and rear beam bushes whilst I'm under there this weekend.

Thanks.

Chris.

Id prolly say, a mixture of cold weather, road crap and rubbish design.

I wonder why you would want to spend the weekend before xmas under the rear of your car. There must be some other motive/driving force?:rofl:

Mine does this intermittently but I've put it down to the unbelieveably aggressive cheapo speed bumps the tightarses in the council have put down.

Yup, there's a driving force alright.

RARB :D :D

Lol on the rubbish design part. The more things happen on the Fabia the more I think this.

Shame really as otherwise it's not a bad car, just lots and lots of silly little things that go wrong and end up being an irritation.

I've got the same issue, It started doing it on the way back from my 30k service last week! Can you let us know your findings when you've had a look under the car :)

Will do. My personal opinion is it's related to the salty roads and all the muck has accumulated in the bushes thus making them noisy. Need to get the car in the air ideally and give it a good going over with the jetwash - get into all the nooks and cranny's under the car.

Yeah mine was doing the same, dealership didn't fix it, but some stick on some bumpy road did, reckon its cleared out the bushes or loosened them up a bit :S

mine are doing the same and also did it last year around the same time. it's well annoying!

please please let us know how you get on

;) will do. I had the boot open earlier, stood on the boot sill and bounced the car up and down - no noise. It seems to be to do with the rear twisting. Either that or it goes away with the boot open thus suggesting it's boot door related.

Looked briefly under the car earlier and as far as I can tell it all seem ok (nothing broken) so we'll see how a good clean and soak with WD40 affects it.

Will let you know how I get on.

Crackpot :D

No noises as you report - but it was noticeable tonight that there was more rumble from the tyres front and back (car had been sat for few hours so they were stone cold, -3 degrees outside temp).

:D

We'd just got all the shopping out of the car and it was open so I thought I'd give it a go.

True, it is bloody nipply tonight. Not owned this car through a proper winter yet so it's no doubt going to give me a few surprises.

Right, try putting some insulation tape on the rear seatbelt locks. i found this well annoying.

Pull seats forwards and wrap tape around the loops. HTH

Ooh, that sounds promising. The noise is very apparent and high up (hence me thinking shock mount).

Will try this tomorrow. Many thanks mate. :D

Well this is what were here for guy. Hope your squeaky free tomorro

It'll be the sway bar bushes - they are a common wear item on VAG motors - don't cost too much to replace.

At the back? Errm, the Fabia doesn't have a sway bar at the back matey.

Twist beam yes, but no sway/ anti roll bar - not as standard anyway.

My Whiteline RARB has yet to be fitted too and those bushes will be poly ones covered in grease. ;)

I tried bouncing the car up and down last night and I didn't hear any noise. I also tried driving with the seats down to rule out the seat clips and the noise persisted. I hope that you have some luck with the cleaning approach.

The cleaning approach did help, no doubt about that. Whilst I was in my scruffs from fitting the RARB I got under the back of the car with the jetwash and blasted off the twist beam bushes, the rear calipers and everything else I could see. Pretty much sorted it but only for a little while. Once the car got caked again the noise returned slightly. It's deffo to do with all this mucky sh*te that's spread all over the roads at the moment.

I agree, I don't think it's going to get sorted this one since it's down to the crud on the road although you would not expect it to happen.

The rear seat hooks make a metal tap sound and sounds more refined than the rubbing sound at the rear of the car going over larger undulations and speed bumps.

i had the same kind of problem as this, and it ended up being my jabba arb, tried cleaning it up- didnt work, tried regreasing that worked but for only a few days, then tried regreasing the bushes on the arb and wrapped insulation tape between clamps and bushes worked a treat. touch wood...

Mine started doing this about a week before my Whiteline RARB was fitted. :)

When I did fit that though I drowned the poly bushes in grease to be sure, before blasting the rear twist beam bushes with the jet wash. All seems pretty good since then.

had a thought this morning whilst doing a quick oil change on mine , the creak could be from the rear spring lower seats , where they sit in on the beam , there is no rubber seat , so metal to metal contact plus winter road sh1te , hence rust , this maybe causing the noise

Metal to metal? Sigh....typical VAG design.
