The 'raw' element ??? - no colours, stark reality of the hardships people took for granted in those day.

Reminds me of a story of a 17th (?16th) century English Ecclesiast (hope I got the term right) who was sent on numerous missions - bearing in mind these would take around 6 months in pretty unsavoury conditions) - to visit China, Brazil............

He was shipwrecked twice, asssumed dead twice.

And we moan about going to the supermarket :o
