In light of the bonnet lifters buy...

Featured Replies

... I think those that already have them should put down in words (and piccies :D) exactly how they fit and what to look out for etc etc... Basically a sort of FAQ / Help about bonnet lifters in general. Ta!

Jason - even I managed to fit them - I think everybody will be OK. ;)

Just make sure that any tools you use for the job are accounted for afterwards and you should be OK, Jason. :)

Does it involve the removal of headlight covers?

Also, a silly question... once the lifters are in, is there much point in retaining the OEM bonnet stalk thingy? I'm wondering if there's a risk of lifter failure so having the stalk still there would be useful? ;)

Can't remember the exact spanners sizes but I think they were an 12 and 8mm...for the Octy.

Do one side at a time...obvious "Yes" but someone will try to do both at once.

Remove the nearest bonnet hinge bolt and the 3 wing bolt (from the rear most one).

Take off the roll-ball bolt from each end of the lift and screw in the correct sized one to hinge and wing. Tighten.

Put one of the roll-ball bolts back onto lifter then do the next one. Put a little grease into the jont before doing this though.

Job done.

Closing bonnet for the first time may take some effort due to the lifters being fully ended for sometime. After the first close everything should be sweet.

This is of course for an Octy and Miltotec lifter but shouldn't be to different.

Denis,

I think you've been watching "ER" too much ;)

So the lifters "replace" the existing hinges eh? Didn't realise that!

I think you need to take a close look at this picture, Jason...

Am I missing the point here?

Is /or are bonnet lifters some form of euphemism for 'shirt lifters '

Who sees them?

Do they make the car handle better?

Do they make the power delivery smoother?

Should we be told!!! :D

I'd be tempted to keep the original bonnet stay in place, just in case. I used to fix big, open-reel tape drives, which used similar hydraulic stays to keep the cover open, and they do wear out, and you end up balancing the lid on the top of your head!

I also noticed a similar arrangement for keeping the door shut on a toilet door on an Airbus A300. Needless to say, I double checked that I'd locked the door that time! :D

Phil

I've posted this request some time ago. Since then has anyone fitted bonnet lifters (Hydraulic stays!?) to a Fabia? They seem to be available only for Octavias.

OK, I understand how these will attach to the body itself....

...and on one side, it's fairly obvious that the lifters attach to the hood in the std spot, but how does it attach to the hood on the other side? :smashfrea

Thx

no need to "disconnect battery negative lead" then???

Battery should be ok

BUT

Be careful it doesnt interfere with the alarm, might set it off.

does anyone know the type and size of bit required to remove the bolt on the hinge part?

thanks guys

On a Fabia it is Torx 45. You can buy torx bits in sets from most car accessory shops. The other sizes are useful as many screws/bolts on VAG cars use this type of bit. You will need a 10mm socket to fit the hexagon end of the bit.
