New Brakes - which ones and where from?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm looking around for the parts for the 312mm brake upgrade but not having a huge amount of luck - typical that I only started looking just when golfturbo ran out of kits! Best I've done so far is on VagParts and that's with the golf anniversary (red) calipers...all in around £480! Can anyone who has recently done this point me in a better direction?* (Ebay seems rubbish - I can never find anything - but I'm probably not searching for the right stuff).

Also, a mate at work with a Leon Cupra R reckons there's little point in me doing this upgrade at all. Says that as they are still single pot calipers they'll fade just as badly as the standard brakes. Is this true? What are the alternatives? (The only one I'm aware of is the Brembo Ibiza kit and I'd need spacers - do they ruin the handling?)

Thanks for your sage advice in advance :)

*it's been suggested that I look for TT's in the scrapyards - but I'm anxious/clueless about sourcing parts from them

this is a worthwhile upgrade, mine havn't faded at all since i put them on,and before i put them on they faded badly, mind you now i am on super dot 4 brake fluid, the tt brakes have much more feel to them and are much stronger,i havn't had it on a track yet but from other peoples expierience i don't expect them to fade,as for where to get them from, nearly everyone who didn't get them off golf turbo got them off ebay,i will have a search for you later:thumbup:

the brembo's require 20mm spacers and 17" wheels, making the track wider should in theory make the car handle better,as for sourcing from the scrappy,as long as the callipers can still slide they should be ok

While they are still single pot, the pad area, caliper size and discs are bigger which means more heat can be dissipated than the standard setup which should reduce (if not eliminate) fade.

Do AP offer a kit as well as Brembo? Not sure, but with most, if not all of the kits, you'll need to be looking at spending more money and you'll need bigger wheels for caliper clearance.

chris is correct,on every conversion you need a 17" wheel and spacers, the ap racing ones are more expensive again and a firm called high spec make a 10 piston calliper:eek:

it depends what you want, the tt setup 312's are the only conversion to retain the original wheel size and not require spacers:thumbup:

I know a few people that have had them done and all have said it is good

If you get it done when you need discs and pads , it does not cost much more to do the conversion either

It is the same part as the Octavia vRS , MK4 Golf anni and the Audi TT

The only thing that is different is the colour

I priced them all up from new from dealers and the Octavia ones ended up being £20 per side cheaper than the TT and the Golf Anni

The thing is with the Octavia vRS comes in green anyway

Hope that helps and good luck in your search

Sarah

Also to be fair Kaiserb_uk if you do end up spending just under £500 notes for the 312mm VAG upgrade its probably still alot cheaper then if you where to get something from Brembo or AP because a set of 17" Alloys would further bump up that price - making it even more costly.

From my humble experience of driving a Mk5 GTi I can definitly say the 312mm brakes are fantastically capable and should do you proud.

never had fade on my 312s , standard pads went a bit noisy , but thats all , currently running DS2500 pads on standard discs , mine might be up for sale soon

had my 312's on for a few days now, havent had any problems so far and they stop the car like crazy :D

Got mine from flebay, 90 quid for calipers hangers and pads :P

I hated them 312's on my car, warped 2 sets of discs and had a 23% Insurance loading, a lot more than the remap. Just ran the 288's with upgraded pads.:)

The pad surface area and the caliper pistons are the same, just bigger discs with the 312mm's.

£500 on a 312mm setup, that is mighty expensive isn't it?? I have got Porsche brakes on my VRS for not much more than that lol! Sure I have to run 18" wheels, but it certainly stops now lol. I think the 312's are great if ya don't really want to change wheel sizes etc, but isn't £500 a little expensive for them? I am sure i have seen sets on ebay for like £280 (buy it now) inlcuding delivery milaege calipers, pads and discs, I might be woring though??

Dave :)
