removing brake dust on alloys

Featured Replies

hi everyone anygood cleaners people could suggest as i have a bit of brake dust build up as i silly billy not washed the car for ages i have some auto glym alloy cleaner but not tried it yet would this be ok??????

Autoglym wheel cleaner is pretty good :)

Wonder Wheels works a treat

Wonder Wheels will do the job however it is a strong wheel cleaner. THe autoglym one should be fine. Afterwards wax the wheels and you should be able to clean them in future with just a sponge/microfibre mitt and some wash solution.

I've used Wonder Wheels in the past and it will remove the brake dust without problems, but make sure you wash the wheel afterwards as it is quite acidic IIRC. Interestingly, the brake dust doesn't seem to embed itself in the Mondeo alloys like it has on previous cars so I have a couple of litres of Wonder Wheels gathering dust!

I use Virosol as per this thread from SCN

You can get it from HERE although no prices on thier website. Have a look in the automotive section as they have thier own alloy wheel cleaner too

Bilberry wheel cleaner from Valet PRO. Brilliant non-acidic wheel cleaner, check out detailingworld for a product test on it.

Wonder wheels for me. However, this is only because Costco sell it cheap. I have also diluted it due to people on here saying it is tool strong undiluted. Work well, although still needs a slight scrub to loosen some dirt.

I needed wonder wheels on the alloys on my older car.

Didnt need the WW on my Dads former Honda though as the wheel design meant the spokes didnt go inwards.

Autoglym motorcycle cleaner*non-corrosive* and cheap, about £6 per litre spray bottle...then a good wax;)

Which is the best wax to use.

Stardrops at 67p and a old toothbrush.

Very good and since you dilute it it goes for miles.

I use muc off.Its for cleaning mountain bikes but it works well on alloys

Wax for alloys - Jetseal 109 or Poorboys or Chemical Guys Wheel Sealants :)

Have to say i wasn't impressed with CG Wheel sealant. It was great for the first 2/3 washes, but found it lost out to Jetseal.

I just use stardrops and a pressure washer to keep them clean. Maybe get the wheel brush out if they are particularly mucky.

Errr stardrops? Sugary fruit flavoured sweets?????

Megs wheel brightener is really good and very acidic. I use it diluted 4:1 and it still shifts brake dust like nobodies business.

Only use it occasionally on my own wheels, before claying and re-waxing. Normally use a non-acidic cleaner from Autobrite.

another vote for muc off, or Hope's **** shifter

If the wheels are bad ...then it's another vote for wonder wheels ...it does what it says on the t.........bottle

Other more long term solution is to switch to pads which don't generate a lot of brake dust :D
