Felicia fun cutting out

Featured Replies

First off sorry for my first post being HELP....

My fun pick up has developed a nasty problem and only being able to fix aircooled lumps I have turned to you lot to help me out.

It started by being a bit bad at starting when cold, starts fine but would not keep running without the revs being kept up. after about 30 seconds no problems. I was not too worried about this and don't know if it is related to the current problem.

Whilst driving it to do christmas shopping it just cut out dead. AA came out, no spark. He changed the coil and it started, just to check he changed it back to the old coil and .... it startedrolleyes.gif. It then ran for about 5 minutes and cut out. But happily re-started.

He could not find any problems as his computer would not recognise it (2 years too old) Drove it home, a couple of miles no problems.

Next day started, ran it around for about 30 minutes including stopping and starting it and then it cut out (thankfully pulling into my drive)

Now it starts occasionally but mainly it does not want to play. If left overnight it will start in the morning run for about 5 minutes and then cut out and will not restart.

I have been though the previous posts, but it is the intermitance of the problem that confuses me as if some sensor was dead it would just not work at all.

Any ideas...

Also does anyone know someone in Bournemouth who can come to me and plug a computer thingy into it and find out what is upsetting her.

Cheers all

sounds like a crankshaft sensor as the problem to me. Easy to change but check first as i think they are around the 30-40 quid mark

Another possibility may be something simple such as dicky wiring somewhere or a fuel pump relay playing up which is less expensive

Hi, thanks for the replies. I have been trawling through Psyzygy threads. I will give the Fuel pump relay a go. If it is failing would this cause no spark?? The first thing I checked was the fuel pump and it seems to be running fine, even when the car will not start. I am in the same situation as Psyzygy was to begin with....no haynes manual, will have to go off and buy one.

Oh and Zachry if you have not got your fun yet, do it. They are great especially in the summer. I have the truckman top on mine so it is great in winter as well

No i havent got it yet. So looking forward to it. I think im gonna be on the lookout for a cab for it myself. But how is it to drive with the rear open in the summer?

ok got the haynes manual now...off to try and fix it.

Driving with the back open is great. there is very little road noise even on motorways, I keep mine open most of the time. If it does rain hardly any gets in when you are driving (according to passengers ). It is much nicer to drive without the truckman top.

Do you have any experience with driving with canvas on the rear (over the seats)?

In Psyzygys thread he also had a time lacking spark. So it might cause it. But i must say im not 100% sure why. I know that you dont get fuel if you dont have spark. Maybe its the other way too. But try to jump the relay or simply find a spare relay at a breakers yard.

But it might also be a number of other things. But it sounds really it might be the relay as its coming and going like that.

I don't have a canvas cover for the back, just a hard top that covers all of it.

I have checked my coil and it has low resitance so I have ordered a new one anyway. Fuel pump is running fine but I wil try jumping the relay just in case

ok...changed the coil broom off she goes:thumbup: for about 5 minutes and then cuts out.:thumbdwn:

Tried switching the fuel pump relay with the fog light relay (they are the same) nothing.

My hall sensor is in the dizzy any ideas how I check it or remove it. Nothing in the haynes about removing it.

also all other ideas welcome

Mines cut out twice

Once I was driving to work the engine cut out, batery light on restarted and drove on.

First thought it was me stopping without pressing the clutch

It happened again on Sunday at the petrol station, filled up, started, was heading out to the exit and the engine cut out.

still not sure if that was me or if the cars cutting out on its own accord

The problem i had with my fun cutting out (using the torque of the engine, ie pulling hard) was sorted after changing the coolant temp sender

I had the sender housing+thermostat changed last year

mine was playing up at christmas doing the whole i dont want to start business :( some times wouldnt even turn over :( lets just say its a good thing i live on a steep hill ) bump start baby:D works every time:D would of been a bit gay if i got to the bottom and it still hasn't started. dont think id be the fan favourite at the traffic lights :D

pooky fine now its warmed up :D just didnt like the cold thats all .

glad your problem fixed bud. enjoy the good weather whilst its here :D
