Yes double post sorry... was just depsrate to find out and start looking... i need my car! lol

Breakers yard or local car electric shop. I think they are pretty universal.

Ah ha!

that my dear boy is not a volrtage regulator (as i thought it was)

that is your suppressor, which does something with the magnets in the alternator to stop any radio interferance, ive got a new alternator in my car and it hasnt even got one of those

the voltage regulator is a little black box which should be somewhere near that one

i honestly havnt got a clue where you could get a new voltage regulator from as halfrauds dont sell them and neither did any motor factor i went to, good luck all the same!

Ah ha!

Cheers. I think the voltage regulator is fine then... that must be whats behind the metal cover on the alternator...

Should it still work without it on.... or would i need to connect the two terminals together that is was connected to?

Thanks

it works fine without the suppressor on it only stops an interferance with the radio, you dont even have to connect the two terminals up just leave it as it is

have connected wire back up on the alternator and will leave it as is till I can get a new one.

Will report back wether it will start later once I get it jump started yet again!

Will I have done any other damage you reckon like to the battery, ecu etc? or has this lil' supressor save my bacon maybe?!

Thank for your help guys much appreciated... without it I would have ordered a voltage regulator I didn't even need by now!!

i honestly dont know, you might have blown a fuse or two, the suppresor wouldnt have done much to save you sorry, its wired in paralel to the rest of the circuit so if it blows everything else will still work

not to scare you but when mine blew up so did the battery, the ecu, the rest of the alternator, the coolant fan and a couple of fuses but that was due to a fault with the alternator, but just a word of warning

Will just have to wait till i finish work and see if she'll start...

If all goes to plan the worst that will have happened is tripped out the airbag unit or something!

Thanks for input guys!

Hullo.I had a simmilar problem.I had a battery that had packed up,i took it to my local car spares and they replaced it with a battery of the wrong size.It was taller than the one i took in.I was unaware of the difference in the height. connected it up and started up the engine, fine no problem.i shut the bonnet went indoors had a drink, came out car wouldnt start.called out AA he noticed two burn marks on the inside of the bonnet. The new battery had shorted out on the bonnet lid.it had also cream crackered my alternator.I took the alternator to a repairer cost me £80 for the reconditioning of it.I took it to have it fitted thinking the same as you that it may also have done more damage. When fitted the car statred perfectly with no other damage to any other of the electrical components,so fingers croosed you should be fine.just picked car up from garage testeday 2/1/08Hope this reassures you.Felicia diesel t plate.I will Never take a car spare salesmans word as law again.

Ah ha!

NO do not connect the two terminals together this will put a short across the alternator output and the battery =lots of heat and smoke ,that bit is a suppressor and shorts high frequency noise on the alternator to earth to stop noise on radios and other parts of your car electrics

Cheers... dont worry... i didn't understand what the suppressor did before... i thought all the powe went through it but after looking at the alternator during the daytime i realised that it just connects between the live to the alternator and the earth so shorting it would not be a good idea!! hehe... gonna get a new one anyway if i can get hold of one...

voltage regulators can be bought seperately from dealer and i think JHM Butts for around £15
