How to Drive the VRs for performance?

Featured Replies

Why do people always want diesels to "be like petrols"?

Diesel engines are used for their torque - look at what they're mainly applied in. Boats. Trains. Tractors. Diesel engines don't need to rev - they have the torque so that the gearing can be "higher"...

I've always said, if you want a free-revving, fun engine, buy a petrol. If you're after economy and "surging" overtakes, buy a diesel. But don't complain when it doesn't go past 4750rpm, it wasn't designed to...

Or buy a Beemer and have the best of both worlds :rofl:

So you are not turning into a lesbanian then, to restore the balance even more?

Hope the Chippy is doing well BTW:thumbup:

123d - whats your best brim to brim MPG to date & what milage has the engine got?

Its all about technique in launching a high powered/torqued TDI...

My mates standard 320d is good at this, being RWD it squats down on the driving wheels, whereas a FWD Fabia/Ibiza/Polo etc lifts up losing weight over the wheels to stop spinning!

However, my Ibiza is a bit different, stiff coilovers, good tyres, remap etc etc and the know-how to beat him easy peasy! :)

I was worried you might becoming a "Welshy" :)

Chippy is a bit quiet so far, but running smoothly thank you :)

Some 10% discount to tempt you M'Lady?

The VRS is not, and I doubt ever will be designed for 0-60 times.

Besides, it would be far more rewarding to let them get away and then catch them up and overtake them once you're out of a residential area, surely? ;) That's what the VRS is best at!

I second that!!!:D

2 choices the first will wear out your clutch sooner however dial up 2500-2800rpm and feather in the clutch (note ASR switched off) you should be able to get it to the point just before wheel spin by balancing the clutch vs foot to the carpet throttle then when you change gear keep holding in the clutch and 3rd no clutch full throttle.

OR if you dont want to wear your clutch out in 5000 miles or less dont do traffic light GP's especially in residential areas whats the point you can only go up to 30 or 40 then hit the brakes - even the fastest cars are only going to be maybe a car length ahead anyway by that speed unless they are super fast cars

If I get a bit of time off and get my **** over there, you can be assured of my custom.:)

1st gear is useless in the damp in my 123D when trying to get off the line. It seems to make lots of flashing lights appear on my dashpod thingy, it’s all very exciting and pretty.

Poo x mpg

Ive had a kind of rethink over it recently and have plumped for a 530/535/540i Sport for the £5-7k price range 52/03/53 reg pay cash for it run it for 3 odd years and probably only lose 2-3k in the process maybe less

Good luck with that, the E39 is a lovely car, but running costs are astonomical (fuel cost can be brought down if you get one that's been converted to LPG), especially tyres, road fund licence and servicing (parts alone are pricey!).

Well my thoughts are for £6k I could get a nice 530i Sport with 90-120k they are timing chain so no issue with cambelt changes, there is no turbo to go wrong on them and like for like the 530d Sport is a good £3k more to buy. The 330i Sport is around the £9k mark and at the £6k mark your looking at Fabia vRS's/Gt TDI 130/150, Leon Cupras etc which will all most certainly be worth much less than the E39 530i Sport.

Fuel the manual 530i is 29mpg combined which based upon 12k miles a year - £1850 (ish) a fabia vRS is £1073 Leon Cupra R is barely £200 more.

VED is £200 which is what pay currently, ins is £420 which isjust over £100 more than the vRS.

Servicing will be done at Nationwide autocentre using Tesco Clubcard vouchers which will work out to be £60 odd a year + anything which does actually break.

The fuel cost to LPG is interesting but it will take 8000miles to break even and then you have the added servicing & insurance & less attractive on the used market.

That sounds a good plan assuming you have put money aside for when things go wrong. I personally wouldn't trust a car like that to a non-BMW specialist, but I guess I would pay extra to make sure it was serviced properly as cutting corners could cost me dearly.

I was also put off by the fact that the rear suspension is prone to failing frequently and only BMW replacement parts (at BMW prices!) were available. I have no idea if that's still the case. Also gearbox oil should be changed at 100k miles but very few are.

Let us know how you get on with the car! :D

Good luck getting an average of 29mpg from a 3.0 BMW petrol engine.

Talking of tires and quick get aways! I drive a 1.4 100bhp. I'm used to it and it's embarrassing performance for that first half a second while it makes sure my emissions are low..but it's ok with foot planted.. still, least I'm being kinder to the planet (apparently..)..

anyways, my lil chirp in is I borrowed my Dads 206cc (he's not a hair dresser.. just easily mis lead).. it's 2litre petrol and got a real throttle cable!.. I was waiting to pull out of a petrol station when someone stopped and flashed me to pull out, I stalled (did I mention how the pedals are tiny and close together.. stood on the brake by mistake in my hast).... this guys still waiting so i restart and do a quick get away..or at least.. i do the quick get away if it had been my furby..

in the Pug? LOL.. spin spin and more spin, bit of smoke and a nice 11 on the road and that warm smell of 2k's worth of warm rubber being left behind.. no joke! hehe! I floored it and was a bit heavy on the clutch which is the move quick recipe in the 1.4!

so yeah, that guy musta thought I was a bit of a pr!k! oh well ;-)

What's with all these people spinning thw wheels?

The ONLY time I got the ESP light to come on was when I provoked it by driving like a dickhead.

Is that what I should be doing?

Drive like a dickhead?
