Rear Wiper fault

Featured Replies

Hope someone can shed some light. The rear wiper has ceased to operate as it should. This is an intermittent fault. The washer squirts fluid whenever the lever is pressed. However, if the lever is set in the "on" position so that the wiper operates every 6 seconds or so (as it should) the system operates correctly for a while (about 30 minutes or so) and then stops. If the car is left the system appears to reset and operate again for about 30 mins. I get a sense that something warms up (because the switch is in the "on" position and when warm doesn't work. Once cooler the system will work until warm again. That's how it feels but that analysis may be completely wrong. Can anyone suggest any sort of test I can attempt to identify the fault? I know intermittent faults are a right royal pain to identify but this is irritating me. If it helps, the car is a 2003 1.9 TDI hatch. Many thanks in anticipation.

Well I took it to the local stealer who told me the rear wiper motor was in need of replacement. Apparently, there was a world-wide shortage of Fabia rear wiper motors. Anyway, today they have got one so the car goes in to be sorted (hopefully) - but not for 2 weeks. I'll keep you posted.

Fingers crossed. I don't know about them, but we'd all sympathise re intermittent faults :banghead:

Interesting - I appear to have completly the opposite problem.

When the temperature drops below about 6 degrees C my rear wiper doesn't work. The washer jet still works OK. If I leave the switch in the on position, depending on how cold the temperature is, the wiper will start working after anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes.

The car has been back to the dealer who tested the motor and pronounced it OK.

I have sprayed the switch with freeze spray and it still works so I suspect the problem does lie in the motor.

When I get the chance I'm going to connect a multi meter up to the motor with some long leads and keep it on the passenger seat. Next time the wiper doesn't work at least I will be able to see if the motor is getting power.

within the wiper motor casing there is a printed circuit with some sort of a chip - more to go wrong when it gets hot or cold....................
