Fitting bonnet lifters.

SKODA OCTAVIA 1U BONNET HOOD LIFTER GAS STRUTS DAMPERS

I bought some of these off Ebay as a Christmas present for the car, however when they arrived (V. quickly considering they came from Germany) the instruction said to remove one of the bonnet mounting bolts & replace it with one of the supplied ram mounting bolts.

As the hinge is set at an angle of around 45 degrees, when I did this if you mount the ram it is forced to point into the engine bay & cannot be mounted to the second mounting pin (which replaces the 3rd wing fixing bolt). After some thought I came up with the following solution.

The method I used is as follows:-

I drilled a pilot hole in the middle of the bonnet hinge between the two mounting bolts, at an angle as near horizontal as possible, then I drilled it out using a 7mm drill bit, then tapped the hole (with the same thread as the mounting bolt) & screwed in the ram mounting bolt. Then, followed the instructions for the fitting the ram.

Put a blob of grease on each mounting bolt before fitting the ram & touched up around the hole/mounting bolt with OEM touch up paint to give it a professional looking finish.

Do the same on the other side & hey presto a professional looking mod.

Here are some pics. Hopefully !!!

Hope you like them :o & that this may help someone who comes across the same problem

Thanks m8, although the up side was the sense of achievement I got when i'd finished.:D

Are they Milotec ones? I found the same problem with the lower pivot point. Its as if theres not enough of an angle in the pivot opening. What I did was put the lower part on first then the upper one. There is a bit of a click noise off it as if it might not be operating right due to the restriction of the throw of it.

I contacted Milotec with pics but they didn't bother getting back to me, also the bar that attaches to the bonnet was not machined properly causing the bonnet not to fully close.

Hi Gaff, No not Milotec, see post 5 & 6  Btw, once fitted bonnet closed as before.

I bought the same ones for my octy. I ended up putting the 2 ram mounting bolts (bonnet end) in a vice and carefuly tapping the ball end with a hammer to create a slight angled ball joint. Fitted ok after that. Bit annoyed that they did not fit straight away tough.

Ay tis annoying to have to re-engineer something that says it fits straight on:mad:

Question, on these units what does the ball joint which goes onto the bonnet "supposed " to be connected to ?

Is it like the Milotec ones? http://www.briskoda.net/forums/octavia-ii/milotek-bonnet-lifters/94035/

No it's a compleatly different design, the balljoint in the bonnet was supposed to replace one of the bonnet mounting bolts, & the ram clips onto it.(see pic in post 1)

Btw mine's a mk1 octy. if that makes any difference.:o

I see you drilled your own hole, I assume it was "supposed" to go in instead of one of the bolts to the right or left of yours in Pic 1.

Maybe, it was part of the reason I started this thread, that it might help someone else with the same problem.:)

But don't balme me if it still takes you all afternoon.:rofl:

To "tap a hole" means to cut a thread in it usually by hand using a special cutter or Tap, so that you can screw a bolt or other threaded device into it.

You need Tap & Die Set to do it, & obviously it has to be the same thread as the bolt ;)

(A die is for threading a bar to make it into a bolt).

Hope this helps

ahhh right. bugger aint got one of them

Excuse my ignorance but I thought Mk II Octys had gas strut lifters anyhow (I'm sure my Brothers does as standard) or am I making this up??
