Suggestions for an estate car-12k to spend

Featured Replies

The suggestions are great but I really don't need a massive estate. (Thanks for taking note Em ;)) But I wouldn't get another Peugeot because the experience with the only dealer over here has been laughable. So, anyone got any suggestions for an estate that isn't space ship size, apart from the A4 and the Fabia? :)

Dunno what they're like to live with ....

but how about Kia Cee'd Sport Wagon

you're all wrong...

Audi S2 Avant :)

My Dad is currently running run one.(2.2HDI estate) When I drive it, it corners like a barge, even with the suspension set to sport. The interior looks old and dated, plus the plastics feel very cheap and it isn't particually well put together.

For a 2.2 the engine needs to be worked very hard, and has no where near the grunt VAG PDs have of lesser cc output. It's cheap for a reason. You may have driven them, but with having one in the family, I can say that I'd never want to own one personally and would never ever recommend one.

Plus they are pig ugly.

Think yours need new sphears or an LHM change then mate. That plus, well it is a kinda huge estate and rides flat even when you have an engine in the boot or boot full of wine/beer etc.

The interior is a bit dated but then the facelift helped, especially in estate form.

The newer 2.2HDI twin turbo is fine, and tbh, I'm guessing you have an older one so compare the 2.2 against the TDI (Non PD) VAG engines of the same time.

I used to have a BX which ran for 250k miles and it was a darn site mre reliable than either of the Octy's I've had..

Apart from my fix it up at a local indy garage comment I'd still say look at the Focus or Citroen C4 etc.

Well why don't you just get rid of the octy for a beloved BX or maybe the perfection of motoring - a 306?

Thinking of doing just that actually. Worked out you can buy an XUDt 306 for less than the cost of a 60k service on the Skodas and could spend another £500 putting new OEM suspension etc on it and replacing any worn parts plus a cam belt change. Would mean you could still have change to tax it from £1500.

306 DTurbo, is only group 5 and even with Mods would work about half to two thirds to insure compared to the Octy II which is itself cheaper to insure than the Octy I.

That plus parts are much cheaper, eg £30 for an injector vs £150+, and things are much simpler so less goes wrong.

The whole "VAG Quality" thing is a myth these days.

Ford, Citroen, Peugot and Vauxhall all beat every single commodity VAG brand. I mean even rover do

Octy II's creak like anything. Fabia's have issues too.

I mean in 30k is it reasonable to go through 6 clutch kits, 4 DMF's 2 gearboxes and a rebuild too, 2 driveshafts, a steering rack and Power Steering pump, a dash pod, a fair few bushes and various other parts all because they have failed under normal conditions.

That plus it appears skoda's UK part distributors can't exactly deliver things intact half the time either (See Steve's body panels parts comment on another thread).

I'm not saying PSA cars are the best ever, but I love it when the ford/fiat/PSA/french slagging offs come out because VAG is better even though empirical evidence suggests otherwise.

So back on topic ......

If you do decide to get rid of the 306, how much would you want pixi?

New Fabia estate is out soon...and top spec is around £12k

Tested in this weeks Autocar mag. ;)

Even though it's big I can't help liking the Octavia Scout. Just been reading a review and a predicted value for the 2.0l diesel is about 13k after one year and 7-8k after 3 years so it could be a possible contender.

I think the Scout is cracking.Think it will be a long wait for a cheap one though.Only been out a few months really.

We might be tempted in a couple of years

Could get a felicia estate for next to nothing and spend the remaining £11k on something a little more sporty/fun? :)

I thought they came out on the 07 plate?

I have a brochure on it's way to me as I can't abide reading them things online. I like to get swept away with the smell of recycled paper and lots of pretty colours. :D

I could see you in a Honda Element Pix. It has rubber floors for, erm, spillages an that.

Crikey Roy James, I know I'm completely monged right now but is that thing back up there really that ugly? As for that Ferrari, the dog would have to ride up front as it looks like it is lacking in the boot department.

Keep 'em coming

Yours,

Colin

For a smallish estate I'd look at an Astra or Focus. Cheap as chips to but in a decent spec and the running costs aren't too bad either. Or you could go for a newer pug.

How about a Saab 95 2.2 TID 3.0 TID of the 1.9 TID 120/150? Vast estate and if thats too big then the 93 is a little smaller both are hugly kitted out.

And very very cheap to buy i.e. 3-4 year old examples which cost £30k+ new are £5-8k

Saab 9-3 Estate or 9-5 Estate?

Subaru Estate?

Or, as others have said - Volvo V70.

Volvo v40/v50 2.0D amazing engine, and focus running gear :)

My best mate has the S40 2.0D SE and loves it, its had a few teething problems but its a great car!

Subaru Legacy estate, not powerful but 4wd, comfy and quite well built. I used to work for subaru and had one for a couple of weeks and really liked it, apart from the fuel bills lol

The Spec B estate is powerful enough, 250BHP, and 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. a real sleeper car.

Volvo S40 estate might be my suggestion, especially if they do it in a D5 version :)

I see no-one has mentioned the Roomster?

Ticks all the boxes and then some.

This is quite an old thread...

But for £12k you'd get yourself a nice vRS Octavia.

Or maybe just about a Volvo V70R or a E39 530i Tourer?

Of course, obvisously you should stick with a Skoda though!

Holy thread ressurection Batman!

I still love the Scout and have decided that I need to persuade Mr P to buy one, so that I can spend my car money on something a lot less practical. :D
