Faulty indicators

Featured Replies

Over the last 3 weeks or so my indicators (both sides) started being erratic (irregular timing) and now they don't work at all.

I found an earlier post that said that they are controlled from the Hazard Warning Switch, but before I went off and got a replacement I checked this and found that when pressed it worked fine. Does this suggest the fault is elsewhere, ie the indicator switch at the steering wheel ?

If it is the Hazard Switch, can anyone help on how to get it out please ?

Thanks

Rob

I'm sure when mine went, the indicators worked fine when the hazard switch was pressed for a while, even though they wouldn't work properly from the indicator stalk.

The hazard switch is easy to remove - just carefuly prise the black plastic trim out with a slim screwdriver, being careful not to damage the console (doesn't matter if you damage the trim around the switch, as the new switch will have its own trim)

The just pull it free from the dash, unplug the wiring connector, and fit your new one in its place. About a 5 minute job

Hi Rob,

The Inicator relay is in the same module as the hazard one, (took my old one apart for a nose:rolleyes2)so replaceing the relay as Andy said should fix the problem and very easy to change, my old estate did the same thing.

Just to confirm everything these guys said. Somewhat confusingly the Hazard lights continue to work even if the indicators don't. And it is a 5 minute job - though it does seem that the switch surround isn't now supplied, but it comes out very easily so there is no reason to damage it or the fascia.

Haynes breathes fire and brimstone on how tight this switch is and threatens one with having to take a lot more apart in order to push it from the back. For once the job is much, much easier than Haynes suggests.

Thanks, guys

Rob

Hence: The Haynes Book of Automotive Fables, Lies and Legends.(Nothing is ever what it seems...)

I've changed the relay, was simple and easy no excessive force needed, just a screw driver (to get cover off and to release the relay) Some good fingers (to loosen the wires off the relay and thats it. Haynes manuals .........(Good for pics and the just but not good for details)

So I'm right in thinking replacing the hazard light switch would more than likely sort the problem? As I have the same thing

It does make it easier if you remove the air vents....a good pull and they come out:Yikes:

Yep i would hope so...it's a common thing on the octys.

It's one of those TADTS:rofl:

I must admit that Haynes talks about access by taking out other switches and things and I did think that perhaps I might have to take the air vents out, but it was so easy to just withdraw the surround and then the switch itself, that I cannot see any necessity in attacking other things.

Work on the philosophy that the less you disturb, the less that is going to go wrong in the future.
