TDI - Can't get past 95 MPH

Featured Replies

2001 Elegance 1.9 TDI (110bhp) - 56,000 miles

Bought car used in Feb 05 with 39,000 miles on clock and remember the car could achieve 110 MPH.

The car has been serviced / oil change at specified intervels. The car seems to accelarate OK, but the top speed is somewhat off the mark. I don't drive round anywhere near this speed, and it was probably more than a year ago since I last checked the car at full throttle.

I'm worried this lack of top speed could be an indication of an expensive fault such as the turbo on it's last legs. In light of this, I've just replaced the fuel filter and I've added "Diesel Injector Cleaner" to my last tank of fuel - neither of which seem to have made a difference. I was going to change the air filter too, although this was replaced less than 12 months ago and don't expect any difference.

Any help / advice appreciated.

Still maybe worth checking the Air filter and the MAF sensor if you have VAG COM or get a main dealer to run a check to see if any codes come up.

Try unplugging the MAF and then having a go on your airstrip to see if you can get past 95. If so, replace MAF :)

Is the correct answer, except I'll add that the car should perform much worse with the MAF unplugged. If it's better or about the same, replace the MAF. Dead easy, and about 80 quid when I bought one for my A3.

If you know someone with VAG-COM you can log the MAF values to confirm it. It may not store any fault codes.

[edit]

Get a genuine bosch one, don't bother with the cheap and nasty ones.

Defo the maf, i had the same thing on my mk4 golf tdi. (110bhp)

Unplugged the MAF lastnight and went for a spin about 4am. Result was about the same or slightly worse.

Got up first thing to book my car in at local VW specialist (Ron Turnbull - M-bro) for diagnosis. After running the computer on it, he asked if I'd recently connected or disconnected anything, as it showed two error codes. I told him about lastnight.

I can't remember what the two error codes were he mentioned, but he suggested it was likely to be the MAF sensor at fault. He offered to replace it there and then, as he had one in stock. I wasn't expecting to get a fix today (no money), just the diagnosis - £25.

He wanted £115+ Vat to supply/fit (including the original diagnosis fee). I talked him down to £102+ Vat. Good price? Bad price?

The new MAF sensor has made such a difference. It feels like I'm driving a brand new car. It wasn't until now (after the fix) that I can appreciate how POOR the performance was previously. Not only can I get to 110 MPH effortlessly, the accelaration is phenomenal. There was a big grin on my face on the way home, I can tell you. :)

I'm so relieved it wasn't anything mega expensive like the turbo. I can't believe that I've been driving round for such a long time with such poor performance AND probably worse fuel consumption.

I rember now why I chose this car.

You forgot to say that your 110 MPH run was done on a private air field.

Absolutely, wouldn't dream of going past 70 MPH on the public highway.

Hehehe ... brings back memories of when I had my MAF changed.

A police car let me out of the side road by the garage that did the repair,

he must of looked pretty bemused by my massive (unintended) wheelspin.

i have the opposite problem, my car doesnt like running under 95 mph

:-D

What is the top speed of the 110 TDi?

I have had 137MPH, GPS speed (on a private air field obviously) out of mine, and now I am wondering why mine is this fast, but others are really bad.

Back on topic though, When I had problems with my MAF, I was struggling to get above about 60.

Chris

137mph out of a 110? was it being towed by a Veyron per chance? :P :sofahide:

Where is that tuning box hidden? ;)

Seriously, I thought it was quick when i got it, and looked for a tuning box myself.

Is going on a Rolling Road next month, just waiting for D Tech to open up.

Does this sound very quick for a 110TDi??

What is likely to have been done to it, so I can look and see if Anything is not standard?

Cheers.

Chris

Dont know about top speed but i agree my 110 tdi was quick too, but it was remapped to 155bhp.

Yeah ha i remember when i got a new maf in mine!!! what a difference!!

I was only pulling yer leg mate

I have no idea whats been done to your engine so there is every possibility it will do xxx mph without the help of VAG's finest :D

ive also had 138mph out of mine, on my airfield of course :)

jeeze if these little diesels do 137 why are we driving the VRS?

were driving vrs's mate cos we can get to 137 in about 30 seconds that probs why. although i havent checked that timing.
