Can you get a Car Tax refund and then renew?

Featured Replies

First thing, am I right in thinking that Band G car tax goes up from £300 to £400 on the first of April? If I renewed a Band G car tax today for 12 months, that goes into the next tax year, would it cost £300 or £400?

So would this work?

Say my band G car tax was up for renewal at the end of May, could I go into the post office on the last day of February and get a tax refund for March, April and May - £75? And park my car off the road that night.

Then on March 1st go back into the post office and buy 12 months tax to last until the end of Feb 2009 for £300. That way I would have saved 9 twelths of £100 in car tax? £75 :)

:thumbdwn: or

I think you must be able to because if you sell your car you can send the remainder of the road fund licence in for a refund and then the next owner will tax it from the date of purchase. Limiting factor would be how quickly the DVLA could process the paperwork of SORNing and unSORNing a vehicle.... :D

Chris

Remember the refund is for full months only and is calculated from when the dvla decide to process it so you would have to send disc off a good couple of weeks before the end of the month or you would loose a months refund so negating any saving. You could probably buy your disc earlier than 1st day of month (but ubless its a new car iirc you can't tax for 12 months and 2 weeks) so you would either have to sorn or park up for 2 weeks or drive round on a disc that isn't yet valid. You might get away with the arguement that the tax is in the post as it wil technically be taxed untill the end of the month when a refund would be calculated from, so should appear taxed on anpr :) I THINK :)

You'd have to do it on the last day/first day to not lose any tax and the offence is for not displaying a valid tax disc rather than having an untaxed car - so tax in the post wouldn't really work.

I know you can send the disc off for a refund but I thought you could refund it instantly too. After all you can pay for it at the desk:rolleyes:
