Pioneer any good?

Featured Replies

If you do get that one, you'll have to get a couple of screens as well;)

I have run sony aiwa and pioneer stuff and I must admit I do prefer the pioneer kit.

I currently have one of my old units running in my mum's fabia and I keep thinking every time I hear it that it is still the business.

it is very subjective but yes I still think that they are about the best.

the other thing is add-ons are so easy to come by as the accessory port into the head unit has not changed for years . so you may have a 12 year old p series head unit and still add an Ipod adaptor to it or a dab tuner:)

cool basically I thought with it being a dvd player that I could get more mp3s on a dvd hence having less cd's in the car :-)

will have to investigate it further!

Hi Yaminchi, for your needs, one possible solution is the P7900UB, which I have. You would also need a small portable hard disk or USB memory thingy that can be powered by the USB port.

Just to highlight the problems I have had with it... These type of stereos currently tend to have problems powering hard disks, so hard disk choice is crucial. I found that directly connected the hard disk worked fine. But using a variety of 1.8m extension leads the hard disk wouldn't work at all, even with the extension lead supplied with the stereo. Adding supplementary power (using a genuine nokia car charger which happened to be a perfect fit and spec) it would sometimes not work and sometimes stop working once it started working. I was going to try see if an expensive USB extension cable with gold plated connectors etc would work, but eventually the solution I came up with was to use a very short USB extension cable (in my case one that came with a USB bluetooth adapter) and to put the hard disk under the ash tray. This had the bonus of hiding the hard disk without the need for drilling holes through the dash and it works perfect all the time. So unfortunately it seems some luck is needed on hard disk purchase. If it helps I use a Freecom toughdrive pro 160gb. You are highly unlikely to experience any such problems if you use a bog standard USB memory key type drive, but the USB connector is at the rear.

There are limits of 15000 music files and 2048 folders (but all probability is you'd reach the file limit first). If you go over these limits the extra files/folders are just ignored and unplayable. Each time you start the car, the stereo scans the hard disk to build up a list. I find this takes a couple of minutes, but you can listen to the radio it continues doing this.

Apparently Pioneer are releasing newer models so if interested could be worth waiting? First Pioneer 2008 Players - Talk Audio Forums

It seems the replacement for the P7900UB is the P7000UB to possibly be released this spring.
