DVI to HDMI Sony 40W2000 1080p help...

Featured Replies

Having read that I need a DVI to HDMI convertor/cable to get 1080p from my PC, using a 7800GT graphics card, I am totally bamboozled by the range of cables available.

Could someone recommend a cable which will let me use my 1080p.

Has anybody got this combination of 7800GT/DVItoHDMI/40W2000/1080p working? If not, what combinations have people got the 40W2000 and 1080p working.

Any other help getting this to work would be appreciated.

I feel a bit of a fool for splashing-the-cash but not getting this aspect sorted out first as the TV will be primerally used as a 1080p monitor :o

PS I know I should be able to get 1080p using Powerstrip any help on that will also be appreciated.

iirc you wont get 1080p output unless what you are playing (dvd/game etc) has been coded for 1080p. you will just get the normal output which from a pc iirc is 720p. when you plug the computer to the TV. make sure it isnt on then once your connected turn the PC on and the TV & PC should auto synchronise. (i know mine does) and produce the best quality possible

I attach my laptop to my 50 inch Plasma using a lead that is a standard DVI to HDMI and the quality is superb.

Amazon.co.uk: HDMI to DVI Lead - 1.5m: Electronics & Photo

the lead in the link should fit but you need to look at the connector that is on the back of your graphics card. im pretty sure that lead will work but i dont have a 7800gt card to look at and ive looked online trying to see a pic but none show the connector. if it helps my laptop has the mobile version of that card and thats the same sort of lead i use.

If you get a standard HDMI/DVI lead from curry's etc if it doesnt work then they should let you take it back

if you need any more help just PM me and ill try and show you how its done with pics using my laptop

Not with that specific graphics card , but we have several 40W screens at work connected to PCs using a DVI to HDMI cable running at 1920*1080.

Plexus Gold Plated HDMI To DVI-D Dual Link Cable (Black) 2m - Ebuyer is similar to the cable we use and it works just fine.

What you'll probably find easier to set it up is to have the PC running on a normal monitor from one output , then connect the Sony screen to the second output (assuming a dual output card).

Enable the second display using your normal windows display settings starting at 1280x720 (720p) , then change it to 1920x1080

Once that's ok and displaying fine , make that the primary monitor and disable the normal monitor.

Excellent! I'm glad I haven't made a £1K boob (again!) The 7800GT has two DVI outputs so I can try the two monitor (well a 40" one!) method. I thought any DVI to HDMI cable would do as they have to made to a Standard - it get's on my nerves how they are trying to sucker us into paying more creating vastly different price points and supposedly better quality standards...Rant over! :orb_no_no

I will let you know how I get on.

No probs.

It's worth using a second monitor for the initial setup as it's all to easy to set it to a resolution that the TV won't display.

There's only a small number of choices that actually work - the rest bring up something like "cannot display this resolution" on the tv

Sorted! Only got the TV setup yesterday - it required a second pair of hands to lift it in place.

Started by using the standard D-Sub PC connection and got that working no problem from my PVR PC.

Then plugged my Laptop in via the DVI to HDMI connection through a ATI X1600 graphics card, the drivers detected the Sony display, cloned the original display onto the Sony changed the resolution up to 1920x1080, selected extended desktop and voila! One nice big blank desktop. Dragged WinDVD across and started to play some recorded TV in less than two minutes.

Thanks for all your help. Glad I haven't bought a £1K white elephant:thumbup:

if you set up to display on the external monitor only you dont have to do any dragging. This is what i do as it saves having to look at the laptop screen then to the Plasma and back again.

I will not be using the laptop to drive it - My PVR PC has an old Radeon 9800Pro with a D-Sub (which I'm currently using) and a DVI output. The laptop is more modern and has much newer & better drivers so I thought it more likely to work from my laptop for testing.

I tried the DVI output from the 9800Pro but it wouldn't work beyond 1280x720 (i.e. 720p).

Hopefully, when I rebuild the PVR with the 7800GT and recent drivers I will have no problems (fingers crossed).
