Just Had a new battery and recon alternator fitted both are working. Right when the car is started the battery light goes dim but is still on, when revved it almost goes off, so the test with the alternator was a gadget with 4 green lights. On tick over only 2 were on when revved all 4 lit up but then returned to 2.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: It should stay at 4 lights

Is there somting I'm missing here:confused: Is it a bad earth a loose wire or is it just shafted

Is the alternator drive belt fitted relatively tight? Might be worth getting a multimeter so you can read off the actual voltages - and check the alternator power with the fans on full and heated rear screen etc to check it compensates as it should.

Are there any other problems? Have you gone on a long run since the new battery and alternator?

Have no other probs just this. will have a go with the volt meter in the morning as its kinda dark now. Just wondering what sort of voltage would it need to read

14 to 14.2 volts. Anything under 14 is dodgy. As for drivebelt tension, just rev the engine while watching the alternator - you'll easily enough see if its speed is picking up with the engine. My bet is that the belt's fine and you've either got a duff alty or a wire you've forgotten to fix back on!

Nope all wires are conected

Sorry to be pedantic... But all connections clean and corrosion free?

Sounds like a dodgy alternator to me, possibly one of the charging phazes going down

Right just been out in the car the light is still on?:confused: Been and taken my dad to aldi, low and behold they sell a battery/alternator tester with a bank of lights to tell you what status your bat/alt is. My battery is good( well it would its new):D My alternator is............... Reading normal power output at idle and good at 2ooo rpm!!!!!!!:eek::eek:AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.

Also checked earths they are also good. Thats it anyone got any black tape to cover the light up on the dash:):)

Mate that doesn't sound right. Drive it by all means, but carry a set of jump leads with you for the next couple of weeks at least just in case - you get my drift?

Well an update! Still going strong, still with a battery light on very dim, belt checked connections checked and its still on.

When on idle it flickers, then when revved it goes dim, the headlights and dash lights do not dim:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Hi Scania

You say in your first post you have fitted a ned battery and a recon Alternator fitted, I assume this glowing Ign light has only done it since fitting the parts?

If it did it before then it was poss one of two things, either the Alt was faulty, or you had a wrong size (wattage) bulb in the dash, it need to be the correct wattage, should tell you in your hand book, but its poss 1.5 W (only a guess)

If the fault has only occoured since fitting the new alty then it is the alternator that is at fault, and as you have only just got it, take it back.

another point, you dont say what the Voltage is? you say you got one of those alternator tester thingys, My best advice, throw it in the bin(I would not trust them as far as I could throw it )and buy a good multimeter (they are not too expencive) and read the voltage.

You need to read the voltage without the engine running(New battery 12.5-12.7Volts) then measure with the engine running at about 2000RPM and you should get 14.1-14.5 Volts.

My gut feeling it is the Diode in the alternator that is leaking(not fluid !) but that is what is lighting the bulb up, (but will not stop it charging)

I had a land rover that did it for three years, and the main dealer did not find it till I told him what is was and he changed the alternator and was fine after that.

Radiotwo

dont just leave it, take the alternator back and say its faulty, then fit the replacement and see if it still hapens, or you may end up stuck on the side of the road in milton keynes and spending 8 ish hours being towed home

is the car cutting out at all? especially when you put your foot on the clutch coming up to roundabouts/traffic lights?

i had this dim-but not bright alternator warning problem after fitting a BRAND new alternator (see other thread of mine)

fixed it by pulling off the little spade plug on the end of the wire from the alternator-the one that plugs into the front side of the alternator (mine was a white thin wire)

clean the spade plug, squish it with pliers to the "bent over" bits are tighter, and pop it back on to its connector. mine was rusty-bingo problem solved

Hi All,

This is my first post but my dad has had the problem with two glowing lights on the dash when running it. He is having major issues with a leak at the passenger side and got this problem along with it.

He forked out for a new altinator and battery has been changed and it still done it. He got someone to look at it and they checked the fuse box - Because of the leak there was rust in there bridging some of the electrics (i think it was a relay box) - this was scraped and cleaned out which seems to have solved the lights coming in faintly and glowing now.

Still got the leak though. Thought this may help - Check the soundproofing under the dash for any moisture, might be same thing.

:)scania666.....as suggested already check the connections to the alternator,if OK take the alternator back to wherever you bought it and demand a replacement.

:)rvm.....your leak will be the windscreen, very common Felicia fault. Any proffesional screen fitter will be able to seal it at a reasonable price.

or do it my way, and put cling flim over the fusebox to stop water getting in there and messing all the electrics up.

Like everything will be on as the electricity will travel through all the fuses and relays.

This stops the water dripping in , the only problem is the water will seap down the wires . the best bet is to get the screen sealed properly to eleviate the problem
