best non-vrs 2nd hand buy?

Best value, cheap to run etc? I say TDI 90

Why, good on fuel, no VNT on the turbo to go sticky, no DMF to go wrong, no PD injectors which are expensive to replace.

As a long term, run it to the ground, low running costs this has to be a good one, but still a bit of fun, unlike the SDI which is IMHO no fun.

Still tunable to over 110bhp with just a map.

It's a no-brainer. 130PD. Don't get many (any?) power loss issues posted on here. Economy is as near as dammit as good as the other 1.9 TDis. Even sensible mileage ones are cheap now as the mk1 is the 'old' model. A petrol skoda will be worthless a few years down the line, a diesel probably won't and the 130PD engine/parts will probably be sought after in the future. I sold a 12 year old mega-miles cavalier with no MOT or tax a couple of years back for £2k - it had the 'right' engine (for Nova transplants!).

The cheapest one I found on the Skoda UK site was £7.5k for a car with a smidge under 60k miles on. Doesn't sound very cheap to me, but it all depends on available budget.... could spend 500 quid more than that and get a Mk2!!!

Chris

As Chris and I have both demonstrated, you'd have had the £500 back, and then some, over 2 years.

I won't have this car in 6 months never mind in 2 years. ;)

I got an L&K 130PD almost 2years ago for a lot less than that. No one in their right mind would buy a Skoda from Skoda - you can get them under £4k easily now with acceptable mileage. The price drops significantly as they get too old to be registered as taxis. It's like people asking how much their VRS is worth on here. The reponses are always ludicrously over the top - and only a mug would pay it! Do the research and you'll find one in budget no problem.

In which case the only question is whether or not you could cover the higher price.

As I said I would want to spend no more than £4k.

I had initially dicsounted the vrs as I thought I would sturggle to find a nice 'low mileage' example within that budget and that lower spec models would offer better relative value within the budget.

Other drawbacks to the vrs would be that I'd be moving from ins group 9 on the fabia to 16 on the octy vrs and this is bound to have cost implications also.

In principle I'd 'like' a vrs but I can't see it being the best option tbh.

I think the diesels seem the most sensible and they certainly have a reputation for going on and on. I'd avoid the sdi as my indirect experience of it so far is that it really is slow. Therefore, I guess I'm looking for a tdi of sorts which, as others have said, could be easily remapped anyway if I wanted a little extra grunt.

I've got to get my **** into gear and sell my fabia vrs se first though!

I have got a 2000 "W" Reg Octavia 1.8 20V Turbo. I've had it for over a year now and can't really fault it. I get 30 -35 mpg commuting and 40-42 mpg on longer runs, which is pretty reasonable. When I bought my car in January last year with 74K mileage and FSSH, it only cost £2650. I have since spent a fair amount of money on it but on nothing that I hadn't wanted to replace. I've done 17k miles in it in the last 12 months (as we also have Fabia vRS and want to keep the mileage to a minimum) and it has never let me down. The only problem I have with it is was an uneven idle speed, which seems to be fairly common with them.

Sounds like good value if you don't let the mileage put you off. I know they say that mileages isn't as much of an issue these days and we shouldn't be put off by it. I guess the fact that some people are meant that you could get your car for a decent price.

Do you think 74k is alot?

I consider anything under 100k reasonable mileage and anything under 85k low!

Don't be put of by mileage. My Audi has 155K on the clock and it feels and drives just as well as some I've driven with 60K.

Well, I'm one of those people who looks a t a figure of 74k and just presumes it to be 'a lot'. However, when you look at the age of the car it's only average and I appreciate that as long as it's been correctly maintained, the mileage isn't an issue.

I'm still fighting against those gut reactions which look at mileages figures and shout 'high'.

I know it's very old fashioned!

Anything under 100k isn't alot for any modern car.

My first car had a 141,000 miles when I bought it, which is probably why I think this way. ;)

I think 74K with full Skoda Service History was pretty much average mileage for a car that was nearly years old when I bought it. Don't get me wrong the paint work was not perfect, with the odd stonechip on the front end and 2 bearly noticeable parking dents but it has a full leather interior, heated front seats, CD player, Climatronic etc. What would you expect for £2650. I don't know of any other car in it's class that offers so much potential for so little money. The reason my wife and I bought the car was as a "bucket" to use for me commuting to work and back (crica 55 miles a day) and for using on longer UK-based journeys, specifically to keep the mileage down on our '06' plate Fabia vRS, which we bought brand new from Chatham Skoda in Dunfermline. I'll be looking to keep the car until I have at least covered a 150K. I have spent a far amount of money on it (approx. £1100) on making improvments to it and would really like to get a remap done to take it up to about 190 bhp.

Cheers

Ian

Octy 110 tdi, its a no brainer, ours is the best car we have ever owned (we also have a Superb & a 350 bhp 4x4) With a remap you can get up to 160 bhp, ours actually scraped 164. Mpg is an average of high 40's & can manage 60+ on a run with a light foot. With the remap it also manages a whisker over 130 (speedo reading) if stretched :)

Its now on around 122000, just had a new turbo but was mapped at 8000 miles so I think the std one did pretty well, Try for the L&K Estate if you can.

Things to check, Gear selection, if stiff use it to haggle but 99% certain it just needs new oil in the gearbox, check the aircon works, its a common problem on all octys, the clutch falls off the air con compressor, dealer fix is over a grand as they will fit a new compressor.

It really is a great car. Ours was totalled just over a year ago & we liked it so much I bought it back & repaired it, also a nice little earner :):):)

With values dropping & if you are prepared for the hassle search the salvage sites for a cat D, there are real bargains to be had. If you are Soton based I know a man who can "iron it out" for you"
