Changing sidelight bulbs without removing headlamp unit?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, as per the title - is this possible?

I changed the indicators over to silvetec indicators at the weekend (that was fairly tight with the headlamp unit still in place) but I cant seem to manage the 5w sidelight bulbs.

Has anyone succesfully done this?

If I have to remove the headlamp unit; do I need to get the beams re-adjusted? The manual says I should get them checked afterwards

Maybe im trying to be lazy but if I can swap the sidelight bulbs out without removing the units I'd be happier.

Cheers,

Lee

Headlamp units come off very easily, and it's probably the only way to get the sidelights changed.

Of course if you have fingers like spider-man :) then it MIGHT be possible.

Anyway you have to remove the ballast from the back of the headlamp unit to get to the sidelight bulb.

Look here : Octavia-vRS.com - Changing Front Lamps - Octavia II

I've changed the main beam and indicators with lamps in situ (couldn't get them out as it happens) but decided to give the sidelights a miss.

Thanks to all of you; as I suspected, the sidelights are going to require the removal of the headlamp unit but that certainly looks pretty easy. :)

Front side light bulb replacement help needed please.

Hi guys, I have searched the forum and although I have noted a photo guide, part of it doesn't seem to relate to my car.

I have recently acquired an Octavia 2007 L & K with the BKD engine.  I have no idea if this model has Xenon headlights as standard but mine definitely has them.  That aside my offside front side light bulb has gone out and a warning light shows in the Information Display.

The photo guide on here shows a hook with the instruction to pull it in the direction of the middle of the bumper.  The problem I have is I can't see any hook at all.

Is this anything to do with the Xenon unit installed as I have removed the white ribbed nut that is clearly visible but the headlamp unit still feels pretty solid?

If photos might be of assistance I will supply them on request.

Any ideas please?   Many thanks in anticipation.

Ok fellows, here is an update...

I simply wasn't looking in the correct place for the hook.  Also I wasn't aware after much pulling that you first need to hold up the black plastic dotted locking flap before you pull the metal hooked lever.  Ok the headlamp unit is now free from the car and I could do with advice before I consider my next move.

Am I correct that the parking light and the sidelight are the same bulb?  I have looked in the handbook and it tells me to remove the two wire clips from the back of the headlamp unit which I have done but there are now two torx screws holding the white plastic cover in place.   Do I need to observe any warnings in view of the main headlight bulbs being xenon?  Will removal of this back cover alter any directional setting of the main headlight? Am I correct in assuming that the sidelight bulb is actually accessed via this cover in the first place?

Thank you for any help and advice.

Sorry I forgot to ask, are these the replacement bulbs recommended and what is the difference between 6 and 10 SMD please?  Thank you

My 2008 Octavia with xenon's has the hook, you can see it here close to the front bumper. As you say you first need to remove the while plastic nut on the back of the headlight...

This guide is very useful...

The parking light and side light is the same function / bulb. It is a W5W...

The MkII Octavia is very fussy with LED bulbs, a lot of people have tried and given up,

If you want a light output that better matches the colour of the xenon's then I'd recommend a blue incandescent bulb rather than LED...

Just one small observation / question........

Why are you asking the Octavia owners how to change bulbs if you have a Yeti? ;) ;)

The OP may not have had a Yeti in 2008 when this thread was started ;)

Ah indeed, this probably would be true. In which case this thread revival beats the one from 2010 about awareness course. ;) ;)

(Makes note to check opening thread dates in future.)

Ignore the compatibility checker on eBay listings they are nearly always wrong.

Those bulbs will fit with no problems.

Cheers 'Freedom' I will order them today.  As a cautionary request will I alter any directional headlight settings if I remove the headlamp unit to replace these?

It shouldn't do, the headlights slide out on a little shelf system.

It does however say in the manual that you should check the alignment after removing the headlights but I've done mine a few times without issue.

Just be careful, don't push or shove the headlights too much when trying to free them off.
