History of the Skoda Rapid?

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me a brief timeline from the 1st Skoda Rapid coupe til the latest models please? its for a uni project.

so i can add some background history to it. as some ignorant people might just say we nicked the name from the Aston Martin's RapidE.

and maybe some images would be good!

thanks:)

The S110R coupe was replaced in 1982 by the Skoda Garde, a coupe version of the Estelle. It came with the high compression 120LS [1174cc] engine and 4 speed gearbox. It was renamed Rapid 120 fairly soon after launch. It was the first rear engined Skoda to feature rear semi-trailing arm suspension instead of swing axles.

In 1985 the Rapid had a fairly substantial facelift and became the Rapid 130. Improvements included a 1289cc engine, wider track rear suspension and 5 speed gearbox. Also, the Estelle Two headlamps, front wings, grille, bumpers ect. were used.

In 1988 the 1289cc was updated with a new alloy 8 port cylinder head to replace the previous cast iron 5 port item and the car became the Rapid 136. Power and torque figures were only slightly increased, but these engines are noticably freeer revving due to better breathing from the port per cylinder head design.

In 1989 the Rapid RiC was launched and sold alongside the 136. It featured a catalytic converter and single point Bendix fuel injection. The all alloy engine was mechanically similar to the 136 except for the dished piston crowns to reduce the compression ratio in order to stop pre-ignition.

Rapid production ceased in 1990.

:)That covers the basics, lot's of other smaller changes were made over the 8 year production run, let me know if you need to know them.

;)I've got to go now, my anorak needs putting in the washing machine! :D

Dave, that qualifies for the "Golden Anorak with Bar". :D

this takes me back to my first car, april 1986 brand new 130 rapid coupe, blue, reg no C616 RRP.

Didn't have the Estelle's twin headlights though.

Think it was £3750 otr. Had it for 8 years, got some pics somewhere, i'll try and dig them out.

cheers

Jonno.

Your old rapid is still about Jonno, dunno wether it is actualy on the road or sorn but ut hasnt been scrapped
