Octavia 1.4 or 1.6

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just joined this forum last night. I'm amazed that such a forum actually exists - it's a great idea. I'm Joe and I live in Dublin. I will be buying my first ever Skoda tomorrow (Saturday) and I'm going to get an Octavia Ambiente in either 1.4 or 1.6 petrol. I was getting the 1.4 but so many people have said that the 1.4 engine is underpowered with the size and weight of the body. Apparently the 1.4 is great around town but when you take a country run or use the motorways you simply don't have the power to overtake quickly enough. Any thoughts on the subject.

I am going to visit three Skoda garages in the morning and the best quote secures the deal. I am a cash buyer having sold my 2006 Citroen Berlingo Multispace only a few days ago. I had a Toyota Yaris before that for 5 years - what a reliable little car that was.

I keep a keen eye on the JD Power Survey and I know that the Skoda are second to none. We have a 2 year old son and we need a big-ish car so that's one reason we're picking the Octavia.

Why do the car mags and internet sites describe the Octavia as a small family car when it's simply gigantic, especially the boot.

Anyway, hello and thoughts on the 1.4 .v. 1.6 would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe:)

Welcome :)

And get the 1.6!

Welcome to Briskoda

Are you talking the Octy 1 or 2?

VW/Audi are dropping the 1.6FSI 115 for the 1.4TFSI 120

Skoda havent got the 1.4TFSI engine.

I'd say the 1.6 will be the better buy than the 1.4 though. But drive both and see how you feel with them.

What do you feel about the Roomster and the upcoming Fabia estate or are they a tad too small?

Welcome to the club Joe

If you're just going to do town driving then get the 1.4, cheaper running costs, but if you're going to be doing any amount of 'fast' driving (dual carriageways, motorways) then get the 1.6 as I've heard exactly the same about being underpowered.

I haven't driven either though so it's all just my opinion ;)

i had a 1.4i astra before my 1.6i astra. after removing the air intake restrictor on the 1.4 it was actually a faster car. the 1.6 was the next series up so might have been heavier. At the end of the day it depends on your driving really to what would suit you best. 1.4 great for around town, 1.6 if you have a bit more country driving. Im also gonna guess it depends on your budget and car insurance quotes too.

hi and welcome to briskoda...

check out irish section for meets...:D

1 on 23rd feb... ;)

Hi Joe and welcome

I'd be in favour of a 1.6 above a 1.4 [having driven both]

Reports from my buddies in the trade tel me that the 1.4 can tend to have its fair share of problems wheras the 1.6 is practically bullet-proof. [especially the SR engine!]

Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks for all the messages. Well finally bought my first Octavia - an ambiente 1.4 in cappuccino beige metallic. What a car, I'm delighted with it. Collected it on Wednesday 13 Feb. Just getting used to the car but I can't believe I have such a large car for nearly €19,000. Can't quite answer my original question yet as to whether I should have gone for the 1.4 or 1.6 litre. The only surprise I had was that I couldn't get cruise control on my new 1.4 as "the engine isn't powerful enough". Suppose that answers my original query.

Thanks

Joe

Nice one Joe

Hiya.

I think the Octy is described as a "small family car" because the rear seats are quite cramped for its exterior size.
