Mongrel's speedo is under reading a bit...

Featured Replies

As in whatever speed you're doing, it's under reading by that amount. :D

Left a client's this morning, and the car started beeping at me! The ABS light and ASR light came on, as did the PAS light! And the handbrake red light was flashing at me. It wasn't until a few seconds later that I realised the speedo was on zero regardless of speed.... So I reckon a sensor has popped. Speed is read from the gearbox right? P.I.T.A job to change?

I will see what vagcom says when I go home, but the usual switch on & off trick didn't clear it this time. :o

speed is normally read from the gearbox, it can be read from the ABS sensors though......

I'm thinking abs module too - a colleague had a smilar problem on his Octy2 TDI.

IIRC the speed is read from the abs sensor, not from the gearbox.

The speed on dash pods 6y1 and 6y2 get their speed signal from the gearbox

The 6y0 (one fitted to vrs) Gets its signal from the abs system, through the canbus gateway.

This is why i have so much trouble trying to get my speedometer adapted properly so that it reads the correct speed.

Mine under reads by about 10mph, join the club matey

Well, I will see. I had an "intermittent" fault with the rear right ABS sensor last time I did a scan, and it had not reappeared. It might have gone totally now although I would only expect that to kill the ABS & ASR, not also the power steering and the speedo readout. Hoping it's just the gearbox sensor, and something to do with the new gearbox that's just been fitted. :)

No speed sensor on the box you have Jason, the only sensor on the gearbox is the reverse light switch :thumbdwn:

Did you say your steering has gone too?

If it has it could be anything from a faulty dash pod to the usual wiring corrosion which runs down the passenger inner wing to power steering setup.

PS what does a scan with cag com make of it?

Edit: should have read first post, post em up when u get home

 is this common on most Vrs's then? as a driving instructor im in **** if get caught speeding:rolleyes:

look here matey: Jaycar Electronics

Speedo Corrector MkII Kit

When you modify your gearbox, diff ratio or change to a large circumference tyre, it may result in an inaccurate speedometer. This kit alters the speedometer signal up or down from 0% to 99% of the original signal. With this improved model, the input setup selection can be automatically selected and it also features an LED indicator to show when the input signal is being received. Kit supplied with PCB with overlay and all electronic components.

silly me - just re-read the post properly this time...

In light of you intermittent ABS scan fault before - try disconnecting the ABS sensors and cleaning them with electronics cleaner. Bung in a bit of silicone grease and see if that doesn't sort it before you go any deeper/more expensive...

Cheers

Well, in true mongrel fashion, when I got in the car at lunchtime, and got in it to go home at the end of the day, the symptoms were not repeated, so I put it down to just "one of those things" - I will see later on tonight what vagcom tells me though.

Mine overreads by about 5mph at 70 according to the Splat nav. Found this out yesterday on the run to Awesome when at 70 it said I was doing 65. Works out to be about 7% if my crummy mathematic ability serves.

Sigh....

Mine must overread loads... ive seen it off the clock a few times ;):D

how can the sensor read off the abs sensors... when i snapped my drive shaft:rolleyes: i tried to pull away the speedo read the speed that the car would of been going but the car didnt move. so it must read off the gear box to be able to tell what speed its doing.

how can the sensor read off the abs sensors...

Alot of cars do, through the CAN bus, It saves the manufacturer money and makes them more later on when the repairs and parts get more expensive. We had one not a Skoda where a stone had taken the end of the sensor off, result was that the electronic PAS did not have a clue and was working flat out all the time until the thermal overload protection cut in.

Speedos are allowed to over read by up tp 10%, but never under read.

What error codes did you get Jason? These are what i got when mine went mental:

Basically, I got all of those - But it's not done it since. :) If it goes mental again I will look to source an ABS module from a scrapped vRS I reckon.

  • 3 years later...

I've got exactly the same problem with mine.
