Police alert for noisy exhausts

£80 ? Is that the standard fine?

How does that compare with the cost of your exhaust?

More things for the Police to do, to take them away from actual policing.

New CPO's should help with the load though.

Mind you unless they are quick at writing ... anything with a souped up exhaust is going to leave a police car standing, even a ickle Skoda :P

74db is the limit on public roads, though how you'd measure it yourself?

incidently, gatso type cameras are being trialed that measure your exhaust emissions, if too dirty you'll get a fine one morning through your letterbox.

that is just stupid!

Thats me poo pood as mine was measured at 96 db last time i went to curborough sprint track for a play day

Suppose this is intended to crack down on the cruising ch@vs who make them as loud as possible intentionally to annoy everyone, rather than perfectly law obiding citizens.

thats not fair!

its the bloody ch*v's driving around in their souped up saxo's and corsa's, that "floor it everywhere" who are making the residents complain.

Its probably residents who think they own the street, because they've lived their so long or they work nights so at 5PM you cant play load music. - what a load of cr*p!

If you ask me no one has a problem with a decent vechile that sounds load, like a performance car or bike, but not a 1 liter 106.

my skud has a standard exhaust, however my bike is loud but in a good way, havn't been pulled yet, touch wood. but it makes about 96db or more.

I think a loud exhaust would be a must on something like a v6

I just don't get it. Why would anyone want a noisy exhaust? I mean, I've driven friends' motors with loud pipes and it just drives me up the wall and embarasses me. Yes, it gets you noticed, but half (at least) of the people noticing you are going 'who dat prat?' What sort of fame is that? All for about 2HP extra - if any.

:)I get what you're saying because some cars' exhausts sound rediculously noisy without sounding nice. However some non standard exhausts do actually make the car sound better, a nice deep throaty exhaust note is cool even if it isn't actually that loud. I love the exhaust notes of the old Audi 5 cylinder and Rover V8's.

My Bugrat's exhaust was measured at 103db at Curborough last year, the limit is 105db! :o

I must admit, i don't want to hear any engine/exhaust noise (unless it's a burbling V8). I guess it's an age thing.

Ok, so if its 74db what about the noise levels from a UK standard road going TVR, and the likes? From what I have read in many other forums the general rule is that, "there is no set rule" as long as the sports car has a british standard kite mark on the fitting then they can't say a thing!!!! Lambo's make more than 74db on tick over....lol!!!

Well i must admit 74db did seem a little low to me, i got the figure from this weeks Auto Express :( that quotes:

Since 1995, EU countries have enforced a blanket 'drive by' noise limit of 74db for all cars on the road. Drivers can have much louder exhausts on the track. This is dictated by the local council, which caps the noise at each venue. The maximum tends to be around 105db. A rare exception is the annual Goodwood Revival which has no restrictions from 9am - 7pm.

However, i've done a bit more digging and found this:

The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 1996

which states:

the noise measured at 0.5 metres from the exhaust outlet at 45 degrees to the axis of the outlet pipe in a horizontal plane, shall not exceed 101db

as this is an official government site, 101db seems to be the correct figure.:o

wonder if this would pass :D

74dB would be just plain stupid; some tyres make more than that rolling past with the engine off!

omg is that a real exuast??? its massive

The Felicia 1.6 makes a nice noise anyway - I wouldn't change it! My 1.3 was a different - though get a bit of a hole in it somewhere and it soon sounded throaty!

As for a decent sounding exhaust you can't beat a V8

If only this was outside of the humourless Bedfordshire police lot at 4 in the morning. All i can say is that there must be no crime down there if they are bothered about exhausts.

Either that or some statistics need to be met

:P
