Rust on tail gate

Featured Replies

My 2001 TDi is just starting to show some rust on the tailgate near to where the glass meets the metal work.

I seem to recall that this has been an issue for other people and that it has been covered by Skodas 10 year 'anti-' rust warranty (or something like that).

Before I approach Skoda customer services (who were somewhat useless last time), could anyone who has had any warranty work done tell me if the pictures below are similar to the issues for which they had work done.

low res (approx 30K):

Cheers,

It's the sort of place where mine bubbled, but no rust appeared before I got some corrosion inhibiter and paint o it.

Got my L&K TDI estate (52) done last week at Claybank, Manchester after paint first bubbled and then flaked off in November/December in the same place. It was starting to bubble on the opposite side too. Would have thought it hard luck and an expensive fix until I saw this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/octavia-i/corrosion-octavia-estate-tailgate/55850/. Its an overnight fix so got a courtesy car as part of the work. All billed to Skoda.

Great thread. It seems to be the facelift octy that suffers, mainly in Estate form and below the window glass. Mine, an 02 L&K estate, has gone too - problem is someone in the past tried to touch it up. It's obvious that it's the common fault and it came from under the glass, a couple of pieces bubbled up/off about an inch long, but you can also see evidence someone tried to paint over the rust probably a year ago.

Do you guys think this will cause a warranty problem? Will they point to some clause that says no one else much touch it and it must be identified immediately not left for a year?

I have only recently bought the car so I can't help the circumstances, all I know is that it's bubbled out and rusted from under the rear tailgate glass.

Comments please?

Greg.

I shall try and contact skoda customer services (want to avoid westover skoda if possible) and hopefully they will pick this issue up and run with it.

Did you have any luck?

Checked my 2004 estate last night and saw first signs of bubbling under the paint, small (like 2mm across) but the start of a problem.

Our 2002 L&K was repaired by our Skoda dealer, no quible & car was around 120,000 miles

I think I've got a service due soon (waiting for DIS to tell me - I'm on variable) so I'll make a point of raising it then.

I really wouldn't have looked unless I'd seen these posts, so many thanks everyone.

Have email Skoda Customer services and there has been no reply. I also contacted Loders Skoda and they have not replied either. Both by email. I might try phoning them next.

It will not be a problem as they are aware of the issue....

The only problem will be your local approved repairer....
