Problems problems... ...

Featured Replies

Hey guys, got a problem with my car again, was hoping you guys could enlighten me...

Fabia 1.4Mpi 2000 (X) 38,500 Miles approx.

During full lock manouvers i.e. exiting a tight junction I sometimes get a quite loud clonk noise, happens on both Left and Right Lock.

Also the other day I was parked half on, half off the pavement and again had a loud clonk, when dismounting the pavement. Even got out and took a look.

Put it into a local garage recently (2 weeks ago) and asked them to check out the noise while they were carrying out some work for me. They claim it all looked fine and sure enough when it was up on the ramp, to my un-trained eye it looked fine.

It's had complete suspension rebuild on drivers side (1 year ago)

It's had Both wheel bearings replaced (1 year ago)

It's had New ARB Bushes (3 months ago)

So go on then give it to me, what's the bad news.... Bet it's gonna cost a bomb.

Love the car, hate the mechanical reliability in certain key areas.

I hope skoda have sorted it with the new version (ugly bugger though ain't it).

Not an expert myself either, but have a search under 'droplinks'. The ARB droplinks on the Fabia are the source of all sorts of trouble.

Sadly, suspension's a bit of an issue across the whole VAG group AIUI...

Been following your thread with interest Chirpy, however I get no feedback through the steering wheel. Bit of a minefield, could be so many things causing it.

I had to do similar work to a Punto of the same age

BTW, wheel bearings can go at anytime on any car.

Ah ok. :D

One thing it could be with yours is the ARB hitting the console due to a collar(s) coming loose. It's the right age etc. Thing is, judging by what you've replaced already you'd have thought they'd spotted such a thing.

The list of things that could cause problems are endless though.

Drop links, ARB collars, ARB bushes, ball joints, TCA bushes, console bushes, track rod ends, the track rod to rack ball joint etc etc.

Trouble is, get it on a rack and all will look well (mine does). Wiggle the steering on full lock, drive over rough ground and all that kind of stuff and things change.

What I suggest is get the car on a 4 poster - wheels flat, not dangling. Things look very different when the car is like this.

Yeah the one my local garage uses is a 4 poster. Will have to get it back down to them asap. Make sure they check it properly.

make sure they swing on things and bash them to check for play. A visual inspection is not enough.
